Overview[]
To bring more attention to volleyball, Japan Volleyball Association's sports promotor Tetsurō Kuroo travels the world to gather the greatest volleyball stars for a once-in-a-lifetime match.
Plot[]
With the hope of bringing more athletes and attention to volleyball, Kuroo puts together a plan to host a volleyball match with players who were once rivals in high school and are now some of the greatest volleyball monsters in the world.
Starting in San Juan, Argentina, Kuroo first attempts to invite Oikawa to be part of the match by telling the setter that he has been the talk of the country since the Olympics. Oikawa tries to act casual at hearing how popular he is but soon becomes annoyed when Kuroo tries to retract his words. Deciding on another method of charm, Kuroo states that he is not the only person who wishes to see a top-class world star like Oikawa raise Hinata to an even higher level with his setting skills. Hearing himself be called a top-class world star, Oikawa agrees to join.
In Warsaw, Poland, Kuroo is running alongside Ushijima who insists they can have their conversation back at the clubhouse, but Kuroo insists he is fine as he does not want to waste Ushijima's time. He reveals to Ushijima that the ace has become incredibly popular with kids. Remembering the young boy who told him volleyball was boring, Ushijima is a bit surprised to hear this. When Kuroo attempts to explain how he is seen like the Terminator, Ushijima appears to find amusement in the thought of being like a robot that plays volleyball. Kuroo manages to seal the deal when he informs Ushijima that Oikawa and Hinata will be playing on the same team and that this match is an opportunity to defeat them both at the same time. Hearing this, Ushijima does not hesitate to agree.
Next traveling to Rome, Italy, Kuroo watches as Kageyama is playfully crowded by his teammates before they depart to eat with Kageyama promising to join them later. Kuroo right away gets down to business about the match and tells Kageyama that he would be on the same team as Alexandre Joffe if he agreed to join the match. He keeps Kageyama's attention by telling the setter how he has seen Joffe play in person a few times and how high his contact point is. Hearing this, Kageyama quickly accepts the invitation. Kuroo confesses he is glad that Kageyama has accepted as he has learned that many fans come to the matches because they find players like Kageyama and Atsumu attractive. Kageyama admits he has heard the same thing, hearing that he and Atsumu are often called the 'Sexy Setters' or 'Games between hot players'. Even as Kuroo sees that Kageyama is not very enthusiastic by that knowledge, Kageyama says that he does not mind such things if it provides a gateway for new fans to become interested in volleyball.
At the Osuwari Restaurant in Miyagi, Daichi and Sugawara are eating together when Daichi receives a call from Kuroo. As Kuroo jests of Daichi catching any criminals recently, Sugawara instantly teases the former Nekoma captain about being released from jail. After laughing at his remark, Kuroo asks Daichi for the contact numbers of Asahi and Yachi.
In Rio De Janeiro, Kenma does a livestream for his fans back in Japan with Kuroo acting as his cameraman. Kenma reveals that he is in Brazil to meet with a friend. In Tenma Udai's apartment, Akaashi is watching the stream and correctly guesses that the person Kenma is meeting with is Hinata. On-cue, Hinata arrives and announces how excited he is to play beach volleyball with Kenma along with his former beach partner, Heitor. After the game, Kenma, lying on the sand, declares the end of the stream but reminds everyone to tune in on August 14th for the next one. With the livestream done, Hinata approaches Kuroo and declares that he will put in one hundred ten percent dedication to the match he has arranged.
Even knowing that Hinata is an in-demand player, Kuroo realizes that Hinata still sees games as opportunities and how he has not changed in this since high school. Hinata asks if Kuroo knows who else will be in the match and learns that players such as Romero, Joffe, Oikawa, and Ushijima will be in attendance. Even though Hinata is surprised to hear Oikawa and Ushijima will be there, Kuroo expresses how Hinata is still as terrifying as ever. Confirming that he will join the match, Hinata and Kuroo shake hands.
On August 14, 2022 at the Ota City General Gymnasium, Oikawa and Atsumu meet and right away do not get along. Suna wonders if it is a good idea to have the two setters on the same team but admits that he does want to post their interaction on Instagram. Hinata agrees that the two setters are getting off to a rough start but thinks this would be better since Oikawa being on the same side as Kageyama would prove to be more troubling, offending Oikawa in the process. Fortunately, as Hinata and Goshiki excitedly greet each other, Iwaizumi appears and manages to stop the setters quarreling by pointing out how mature adults can get along. At that time, Romero excitedly appears and is right away admired by Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Hinata.
Team A is revealed to have Aran, Romero, Atsumu, Oikawa, Hirugami, Hinata, Goshiki, Sakusa, Komori, Heiwajima, Hakuba, and Suna.
In the Team B locker room, Ushijima is speaking with Kageyama about how adding white charcoal to rice can give it a better taste. Kageyama says he will try this but questions what white charcoal is. Bokuto claims to believe that white charcoal is regular charcoal and the three do not notice Hoshiumi's annoyed expression at hearing their conversation.
Their discussion is ended when Yaku and Joffe arrive at the same time. While Yamamoto happily greets Yaku, Hyakuzawa right away thinks of a Zootopia reference at seeing the height difference between Yaku and Joffe.
With the final players, Team B's players consist of Kiryū, Bokuto, Kageyama, Iizuna, Joffe, Ushijima, Yamamoto, Hoshiumi, Yaku, Inunaki, Hyakuzawa, and Washio.
In the stands among hundreds of fans, Kenma is seen sitting with Lev and Coach Nekomata. Outside the stadium, Osamu is selling onigiri from a food truck. Yamaguchi has arrived to watch the match while Tsukishima and Koganegawa are at their team practice. Tanaka is coaching young children how to play volleyball as Kiyoko is at work assisting a customer pick shoes.
As the teams begin to take the court, Kuroo watches from the balcony area and hopes that the people of the world will become invested in volleyball. As the announcement is made that the game is about to start, Hinata and Kageyama are seen shaking hands. Yachi is spotted taking a picture of the banner with all of the players in the match and Asahi on his phone with Daichi and Sugawara as the game begins.
