"Bokuto and Akaashi's Philosophy" (Japanese: 木兎赤葦の賢者学 Bokuto Akaashi no Kenjagaku) is the first chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on May 13, 2019 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

After realizing how easy he is for Akaashi to figure out, Bokuto aims to prove that he can be unpredictable. However, the harder he tries, the more he causes several situations to escalate.

Plot[]

In the hallways of Fukurōdani Academy, Bokuto questions Konoha and Komi if he could jump high enough to touch the ceiling. When the two claim that the ceiling may be too high for the ace to reach, Bokuto quickly aims to prove them wrong. While he managed to touch the ceiling, he accidentally knocked one of the ceiling tiles down in the process. As Konoha and Komi point out that Bokuto could get in trouble for this, Akaashi appears while carrying several tools to repair the damage.

As the third-years are walking home from school, Bokuto compliments how Akaashi was able to save them from getting into trouble by being so smart and prepared. The others comment on how Akaashi usually seems like a normal person but will come off as strange every so often. As they come to a bridge, Bokuto questions what they mean and is shocked to hear that they are surprised Akaashi actually respects the ace. Bokuto firmly claims that it's because he's the ace that he should be respected so much, until he's reminded that he damaged the ceiling, which causes people to actually see him as being simpleminded. Yukie and Suzumeda comment on Akaashi's incredible skills since none of them know when Bokuto's demeanor will suddenly change.

As Bokuto tries to get his teammates to understand the concept of trying to create a thrilling atmosphere in volleyball, he suddenly goes over the bridge railing and falls into the river below. As the third-years begin to panic, Akaashi suddenly appears with everything needed for a water rescue, explaining that he is aware Bokuto tends to get excited when heading home and figured an accident like this would most likely happen sooner or later. After being fished out of the river, Bokuto begins to see how easy he is to read, although the others believe that Akaashi simply has a knack for always being ready to save Bokuto regardless of the situation. The second-year setter then shows Yukie that he carries a notebook that has the details of events that he expects might occur, which gives him the best idea of what to prepare for. Hearing this, Bokuto declares that he will not allow Akaashi to predict what he might do the next day. This declaration was something Akaashi also wrote in the notebook, which stuns several of the players that he was able to predict this much.

The next day, everyone is surprised to see Bokuto appear to practice wearing swimming attire. The ace declares that they will spend the day swimming and many believe this behavior is Bokuto wanting to be unpredictable. Unfortunately for him, Akaashi already figured as much and also arrived at practice in a swimsuit. He further frustrates Bokuto when he explains that the ace arrived in swimming trunks because he believed their female managers would be fawning over how he looks in swimming trunks but he's actually very embarrassed about falling into the river the previous day. Trying to find a way out of being called out, Bokuto instead declares that he arrived in this manner because he wanted everyone to start playing beach volleyball. Although he manages to get everyone to change into swimming attire, they continue to play volleyball like normal.

Later on, Bokuto once again becomes upset at the thought of being easy to read, especially for specific blockers from Karasuno and Nekoma. Even though his teammates are trying to cheer him up, Bokuto claims that he will not believe them unless they mean what they are saying. Fortunately, they are able to bring him back into high spirits when they claim that he is a powerful and unstoppable ace. With his new confidence, Bokuto again aims to surprise Akaashi in being unpredictable but is again horrified when Akaashi reveals that he already guessed that Bokuto was going to suggest that the team take a trip to the ocean. Refusing to back down, Bokuto states that he wants to go to the ocean to become a pirate king. Going along with the ace's antics, Akaashi reveals that he predicted this as well and has made the preparations of gathering a ship and pirate crew. Bokuto is suddenly whisked away by a group of pirates as he tries to protest this was not the type of ace he meant to become. Akaashi takes this chance to explain to the others that because Bokuto is always dragging others into his shenanigans, he felt it was time for the ace to get a taste of his own medicine.

Bokuto returns to the volleyball club and reveals that he managed to convert the pirates into volleyball players that will be joining the volleyball team. The announcement even surprises Akaashi. The Fukurōdani team admit that Akaashi is an amazing person but that even he cannot outdo someone like Bokuto.
