"Chapter 1" is the first chapter of the Let's! Haikyū!? series, written and illustrated by Retsu.
Overview[]
Hinata is about to participate in his first volleyball tournament. During the tournament, he meets some new and interesting people.
Plot[]
Middle school third-year Hinata eagerly enters the gymnasium and smells the air Salonpas.
Supporter: Hinata thanks his teammates for their support in the game. Embarrassed, Kōji pleads for Hinata to stop thanking them. Izumi casually plays off how their own tournaments are done so they were free to help their friend. Tag-along housewife Mamiko Yamamura poetically comments how youth is always growing when Kōji points out how she is not allowed to be with them.
Dependable: As the tournament is getting ready to start, Hinata boldly proclaims that he will spike through anyone. He portrays the image of someone that Kōji and Izumi can completely depend on until Hinata's stomach starts to get the better of him. Mamiko appears and offers Hinata some diarrhea pills that also act as digestive aid. She then offers Hinata a stomach band, chocolate, and the offer to have his ears cleaned; demonstrating her dependable nature as a housewife to the young players.
King 1: Kageyama has appeared. His younger teammates wonder how he gained the nickname the King of the Court and figure that it's because of the crown he is wearing. When Kageyama turns around to glare at them, he also presents a scepter.
King 2: As Hinata is able to spike past the blocker, Kageyama sees his incredible jumping ability and reflexes, and immediately decides that Hinata would be a perfect court jester.
Memento: Even though Yukigaoka Junior High lost in straight sets, Hinata appears with a plastic bag and attempts to catch an air sample in order to preserve the memory of his first tournament.
Means of Transportation: Hinata confronts Kageyama outside the gym and promises that he will not lose the next time they face each other when he suddenly notices that Kageyama has a white horse with him. Kageyama explains the horse, named Tobio Kaiser, belongs to him.
Fated Rival: As Kageyama is chastising Hinata that only the strong get to stay on the court the longest, Mamiko suddenly finds herself in a tussle with Tobio Kaiser.
