"Cheering Team, Rendezvous at Night" (Japanese: 応援団, 夜の会合 Ōen-dan, Yoru no Kaigō) is the fifth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on Shōnen Jump+.
Overview[]
While out drinking, Shimada, Saeko, and Akiteru attempt to determine which of them is the more admired and respected mentor/older sibling.
Plot[]
Together at a bar, Shimada brags how the Karasuno team and the Neighborhood Association Team will be having their first practice match for the first time in what's felt like ages. Saeko mentions how she's been practicing in secret to surprise her brother while Akiteru voices his joy at getting to join in the practice this time around and that he's looking forward to playing against his brother.
Takinoue is envious of how the three have people they care for or mentor and wishes he had someone looking up to him in the same manner. This leads to Shimada, Saeko, and Akiteru to a debate of which of them is the more respected by their younger comrades which Saeko decides to turn into a contest with Takinoue as the judge.
Shimada begins his argument by saying that he is the only one of the to have an actual pupil that he mentors, earning him the first ten points. Saeko admits that familial bonds can only allow so much and admits she's envious of the bond between a mentor and their pupil. Akiteru decides to try to earn points when he points out that Kei normally refers to him as 'my brother' to others but will instead call him 'big bro' when it's just the two of them. Saeko becomes overwhelmed with emotions at this and declares Akiteru should receive five hundred points.
Takinoue takes the chance to state that, no matter how much Saeko and Akiteru talk about the bond with their brother's, he has only ever seen the bond between Shimada and Yamaguchi. Akiteru soon points out how proud he is of Kei having been chosen as a starting regular while he himself had been a benchwarmer. Even with this difference, he feels that he was still able to give wholesome advice to his younger brother. This act causes Saeko to grant the older Tsukishima two thousand more points.
Saeko soon admits that she cannot measure up to them when it comes to volleyball but still believes that she is the most loved and respected; stating that Tanaka had not so long ago been blond himself which he surely picked up from her. However, she soon adds that it's only natural for them to want to be admired by their younger counterparts. Shimada and Akiteru quick agree with her statement. They soon begin discussing ways of how they can further earn the respect and admiration they long for.
The next day, Ukai is welcoming everyone for the practice match when he notices certain people have yet to arrive. Just as he is about to call and find out where they are, Takinoue appears while supporting Akiteru and Shimada and Saeko ready with her taiko drum. Shimada, Akiteru, and Saeko attempt to prove they are in high spirits but it's evident of how weary they are from their night out. Takeda soon appears and warns the three that they will not be entering the gym in the condition they are currently in.
As they apologize and agree to head home, Tanaka, Tsukishima, and Yamaguchi make a silent promise to never turn out like them.
