"Conversing with Oikawa-san" (Japanese: 及川さんとしゃべろう Oikawa-san to Shaberou) is the tenth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

Oikawa suddenly finds himself hindered after losing his voice. He believes to have found help in the form of his closest friend, Iwaizumi, only for things to go from bad to worse.

Plot[]

Craving ramen, Oikawa and Iwaizumi are upset to see their regular ramen shop is closed. When Iwaizumi suggests they just get instant ramen, Oikawa quickly dismisses the idea with the claim that his refined palette will not appreciate instant ramen. Iwaizumi spots another ramen shop and says they should try this new location. He notices a spicy ramen challenge poster, and successfully baits Oikawa into accepting the challenge.

The next day, Iwaizumi announces to the team that Oikawa is unable to speak due to the extreme level ninety-four spiciness of the noodles he consumed, but adds that it was also a result of Oikawa wanting to show off in front of the cute waitress and therefore rolled a one-hundred-sided die that resulted in getting one of hottest dishes.

Oikawa begins to feel depressed about not being able to speak when he suddenly hears members of his fan club sympathize for him. He continues to listen as some of the girls comment how, now that they won't hear his trash talking and bad personality, he's the type of guy they can really be attracted to. This boosts Oikawa's mood back to his normal self.

Oikawa soon tries to get practice going but quickly finds having to write everything down to be a hassle. Iwaizumi brings up a possible solution of being his interpreter, stating that he knows Oikawa so well that he should know everything the setter would say based off his expressions. Oikawa becomes filled with joy at this possibility, thinking that Iwaizumi is always there for him, only to suddenly become startled when Iwaizumi hits him on the head. The Seijoh ace yells at the setter, thinking that his facial expression was saying that someone as unrefined as Iwaizumi wouldn't be able to understand him. Kindaichi surprises Oikawa by having correctly guessed that Oikawa's expression meant that he was happy to have Iwaizumi's help. Oikawa attempts to write out an S.O.S. but Iwaizumi takes his cards away. Kindaichi again correctly reads what Oikawa was trying to say by not wanting to let Iwaizumi continue to interpret for him.

Deciding it would be best not to stand out until he recovers, Oikawa is soon approached by Yahaba wanting to learn how to jump serve. Oikawa attempts to go through the motions of the serve, but this, unfortunately, isn't enough. Iwaizumi figures that Oikawa is telling Yahaba that he simply needs to get more fired up. Matsukawa and Hanamaki agree with what Iwaizumi guessed. Iwaizumi continues his incorrect assumptions by telling the rest of the team that Oikawa is threatening to beat them up unless they start putting more heart into their practice.

Figuring it would be safer to be alone, Oikawa decides to start jogging outside but finds himself being followed by his close friend. Hoping to outrun him, Oikawa mistakenly bumps into Yoshiki Towada. Not wanting to face a possible fight with Towada and his teammates, Oikawa tries to back away but Iwaizumi states that Oikawa is demanding an apology for bumping into them. The Ohgiminami players quickly figure out who Oikawa is as Iwaizumi continues to claim that Oikawa is calling them peasants who should be on their knees begging for mercy.

Towada and his friends claim that, while they may be easy to beat in volleyball, they will not lose in an old-fashioned fist fight and begin to accept the challenge. At hearing Iwaizumi say that Oikawa claims he can take them all on by himself, Oikawa attempts to speak to stop things from escalating. His strained voice causes the Ohgiminami players to run off in fear that Iwaizumi's claims of Oikawa beating them all is true.

Eventually, Oikawa's voice returns. He is finishing telling Yahaba of the near fight when Iwaizumi and Kindaichi appear. Kindaichi explains that Iwaizumi didn't want to be outdone by Oikawa and had taken the same spicy noodle challenge, losing his voice just like Oikawa had. Oikawa sympathizes with Iwaizumi and offers to interpret for him only for Iwaizumi to hit him, leading Kindaichi and Yahaba to see that Iwaizumi is no different than usual.
