Overview[]
Karasuno wins the first set but soon find themselves struggling when Kyōtani proves to be a player to be cautious of.
Plot[]
With Kyōtani having knocked Kindaichi down and stealing the set, he hits a powerful spike past Hinata but everyone is shocked to see the ball has landed out. With this, Karasuno has won the first set.
Oikawa is completely stunned by what has happened and has no idea where to start correcting Kyōtani but Iwaizumi takes charge and punches Kyōtani on his head while yelling about how reckless he was. Kyōtani admits that his mistake was most likely due to his excitement of being back on the court again.
After the court switch, Hinata notices that Kyōtani is staying in the starting line-up. Kageyama believes that Kyōtani must be a smart player if he is replacing Kunimi and warns Hinata to be on guard. Oikawa informs Kyōtani that he can play how he wishes but will not hesitate to have him removed from the game if he starts causing problems. Kyōtani does not seem to take Oikawa's warning seriously until Iwaizumi makes the same threat and he confirms his understanding, annoying Oikawa in the process.
Yahaba reveals that Kyōtani has challenged Iwaizumi to numerous athletic competitions in the past and had lost to the ace every single time. Because of this, Iwaizumi is the only third-year that Kyōtani will listen to.
Asahi makes the first serve of the second set but it lands out. Oikawa's serve also lands out but Daichi notices that his aim is getting better. Tsukishima's serve barely makes it over the net and Iwaizumi is forced to make the save though the ball goes right back to Karasuno. Tanaka attempts a counter but Watari manages to save it.
Realizing he needs to calm Kyōtani down to play properly, Oikawa sends him a set. Shimada and Takinoue comment how Kyōtani is making his approach directly next to the net. Kageyama, Hinata, and Tanaka attempt to block but Kyōtani makes a surprising move by spiking a sharp cross shot that lands in front of the attack line. Shimada explains to Saeko that Kyōtani did this approach to make the spike because it would be harder for him to go head on against a triple block if he had attempted a straight shot.
In the next rally, Kindaichi and Kyōtani appear to be heading for a quick attack at the same time but Hinata notices Kindaichi's hesitation and goes to block Kyōtani but fails to stop him. Oikawa tells Kindaichi that, while he should be cautious, he doesn't need to be too afraid of Kyōtani and points out that Hinata noticed he pulled back from the attack.
Daichi receives Iwaizumi's serve but then Iwaizumi makes the receive on Hinata's next spike. Hinata then notices that Kindaichi is approached for a C-quick and nearly follows but Oikawa sets to Kyōtani instead. Kyōtani lands his spike but crashes into Hanamaki in the process. Despite Kyōtani having scored three times in a row, Takeda and Daichi notice that since the second-year was subbed in, Aoba Johsai's plays are more chaotic than usual.
Iwaizumi's serve goes into the net and Kageyama is next to serve. As Hanamaki receives, Hinata watches Kyōtani make his approach down the center and jumps to block only for Oikawa to send the set to Kindaichi instead. With Kindaichi successfully landing the spike, Oikawa notices that Kyōtani is upset at having been used as a decoy and decides to utilize this.
