"God Finger Kenma" (Japanese: ゴッドフィンガー研磨 Goddofingā Kenma) is the second chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

Kuroo and Yamamoto spy on Kenma as he enters a video game tournament.

Plot[]

While walking home, Kuroo asks Kenma if he would be interested in joining him in getting new shoes on Sunday. Kenma turns down the offer and explains that he has plans for that day. Surprised at hearing that Kenma has plans, Kuroo questions if the setter possibly has family visiting or even has a romantic date. Kenma denies these ideas and reveals that he's participating in a video game tournament at a local arcade.

The next day, Kuroo is telling the rest of the Nekoma team of Kenma's plan to be in the tournament. Yamamoto is unable to understand how an entire tournament can come out of video games. Yaku tries to explain how popular these tournaments actually are and even questions Lev on the popularity of professional gaming tournaments in Russia, of which Lev is actually uncertain as he surprisingly has no interest in video games. Kuroo then reveals that he does play a few games due to Kenma inviting him to play once in a while. He shows the team his character profile, which turns out to be a female avatar dressed as a cat. He explains that he does this in order to earn the trust of male players and, when their hopes are at their peak, reveals that he too is a man. Fukunaga questions Yamamoto what his avatar looks like, and Kuroo answers that Yamamoto has made his look like Kiyoko. Yamamoto demands to know how Kuroo knows this, and Kuroo answers that one of his online friends named "Crow" is actually Kuroo himself and not a twenty-something-year old married female officer like Yamamoto had been led to believe.

Kuroo then asks Yaku if he plays any games. The senior libero answers that he does and shows them his avatar of a large, muscular warrior. Although the others are aware of how some people project how they wish to look onto their gaming character, Lev comments that the character is the total opposite of Yaku, earning the tall middle blocker Yaku's wrath.

Seeing the possibility of Kenma quitting volleyball to become a professional gamer, Yamamoto asks Kuroo if it's alright for Kenma to participate in the tournament. Kuroo tries to assure the Nekoma ace that Kenma will not quit volleyball, and that there's nothing to worry about. However, Yamamoto remains unconvinced and says that he and Kuroo should go to the tournament to keep an eye on Kenma.

On Sunday, Yamamoto and Kuroo arrive at the gaming tournament. Kuroo again attempts to convince Yamamoto that if Kenma cannot beat the attending players, then he will not have the motivation to become a professional gamer. Suddenly, an announcement is heard that Kenma has been declared the winner of the current round. Even when Yamamoto points out how Kenma had won the first round with basically no trouble, Kuroo still feels there is nothing to worry about, his carefree mood now concerning Yamamoto. Kenma's next opponent, Atsuhara, is someone that Yamamoto declares practically gives off an aura of victory. However, Kenma makes quick work of Atsuhara, and defeats him in no time. Kuroo continues to try to assure Yamamoto that any human can easily become a professional gamer. At this point, Kenma's next challenger in the semifinals is announced. Yamamoto is horrified to see that Kenma's next challenger, G-1000, is not actually human but is, in fact, a robot. G-1000 declares that he will not be disturbed by emotions like humans, but soon becomes distraught when Kenma easily claims victory.

Just then, a large alien being arrives, claiming to be the strongest creature in the universe with the ability to read hearts. To the alien's horror, he is unable to read Kenma's heart and is quickly defeated. Kenma is hailed as the champion of the tournament. As Kenma is given praise from those he beat, Yamamoto believes now is the time to speak with Kenma before it's too late. They are unable to even make their way to Kenma when another challenger arrives. A man claiming to be the absolute master of gaming scolds Kenma for being called the best in Japan without first having faced the master. Unfortunately, he too falls short of Kenma's abilities. Even though he's been beaten and Kenma is labeled as the new champion of Japan, the old master offers Kenma a ticket to the United States to become the world champion.

At the airport, Kuroo and Yamamoto watch a departing airplane. Seeing this, Kuroo finally wonders if things turned out the opposite of what he expected.

On Monday, Yamamoto and Kuroo question if everything that happened the previous day actually occurred and believe the Kenma they see before them is an illusion. At Kuroo gripping the head of the Kenma they see, Kenma voices his pain at Kuroo's grasp, and Yamamoto rejoices at seeing Kenma is still with them. He questions Kenma about why he decided against going to America to become the world champion. Kenma answers that it would have been too much trouble to go overseas where no one would understand Japanese and that he would have had to play games out of obligation. Hearing how this was too much of a hassle that he did not want to deal with, Yamamoto begins to question Kenma's future beyond that of the volleyball club.
