Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle (Japanese: 劇場版ハイキュー!! ゴミ捨て場の決戦 Gekijōban Haikyū!! Gomi Suteba No Kessen) is the movie sequel to Haikyū!! To The Top, based on the manga series by Haruichi Furudate, that was released in Japanese cinemas on February 16, 2024.
Overview[]
The match between fated rivals Karasuno High and Nekoma High has finally arrived.
Plot[]

Lost in a neighborhood, Kenma Kozume reaches for his phone but sees the battery has died. Deciding to stay put until someone comes for him, he sits down and plays a game on his gaming console. It isn't long after he starts that Shōyō Hinata approaches him. Hinata immediately notices that Kenma isn't from the area and tries to strike up a conversation when he notices Kenma's volleyball shoes. After introducing themselves, Hinata asks Kenma if he enjoys volleyball. Kenma answers that he's rather neutral about volleyball but does admit that he dislikes getting tired and sweaty. He then tells how he does have a friend who plays and mainly sticks around for him, but he himself does not plan to stay interested in volleyball after high school.
The morning of the third day of Nationals, Kenma is trying to sleep in, but Yamamoto startles him awake. The tired setter makes his way downstairs when he receives a text message from Hinata, who is excitedly looking forward to their match. Kuroo can tell who Kenma is messaging and knows the Karasuno middle blocker will be looking forward to challenging Kenma in particular with everything he's got.
While preparing for a morning run with Kageyama, Hinata receives Kenma's reply and figures the second-year setter isn't concerned about the match. Despite this, Hinata plans to go all out against Kenma and all of Nekoma.
Moments before the players take the court, Naoi and Coach Nekomata bask in the glory that Nekoma and Karasuno are finally facing each other in a real match. Nekomata does feel that some are just as happy to see the match and are therefore not as concerned about the outcome. Takeda and Ukai approach him, who promise to show just how strong Karasuno has become—a challenge that Nekomata eagerly accepts.

A referee calls for Daichi and Kuroo. Kuroo wastes no time in teasing Daichi about Karasuno having performed so many penalty laps during the camps. Daichi silences the Nekoma captain by gripping his hand with more strength than necessary. In the bleachers, Mika teases Suguru about possibly supporting Nekoma, but the former Nohebi captain quickly states that he just wants to watch them lose.
As the players prepare themselves, Karasuno and Nekoma each receive cheers of support from their respective sides. As Yamamoto tries to get Kenma more invested, Nekomata can easily see that Kenma is actually going over every possibility for Nekoma to gain the upper hand on Karasuno. Kenma quietly admits that he's not sure such a thing is possible, but Kuroo quickly brushes this off by having everyone gather for the team mantra.
The match is set to start as the starting players take their places and are introduced. As Ukai is shown on TV, Ikkei boasts to those gathered in his hospital room that Ukai is his grandson. His students ask him if he wishes he could watch the match in person. Ikkei admits it would be nice if he could but is happy that his student is there and his blood by Ukai. At the same time, Ukai acknowledges how this match is between the current generations of Karasuno and Nekoma but admits that it took the help of many to get the Karasuno team to this point. He hopes that he will be able to enjoy watching the match.
At the whistle, Kageyama performs the first serve, but Kai receives it. Kenma sets to Lev, but Nishinoya picks up the spike. Kageyama sets to Asahi, but Yaku receives the powerful spike, although he does get knocked off his feet in the process. The force behind the spike and receive send the ball back to Karasuno, where Tanaka calls for the set. Although his cross shot gets by the blockers, Yamamoto saves the ball. However, he sees it's going directly above the net, which forces Hinata and Lev into a joust. Lev wins the joust, but the ball is still in play as Hinata makes a dash for the side with Lev chasing after him.

As Hinata waits for the ball, he remembers how Kenma once told him how he thinks a real match would be more interesting instead of just a practice match. Hinata spikes the ball and gains the first point of the match when Kenma is unable to receive the ball. The setter then hears Hinata state how they have finally reached the match that cannot be redone and smiles.
In a flashback of the previous night, the Nekoma team is watching the recording of Karasuno play against Inarizaki High when Kenma points out how Hinata is not charging forward as often as he used to. This immediately causes Kuroo to realize that Hinata and Karasuno have figured out how to use the minus-tempo as a decoy method. Yaku comments that this is an impressive development since they last played against Karasuno in October. Fukunaga, in his unique way, points out that Nekoma has evolved as well.
Karasuno is stunned as they watch Nekoma perform a synchronized attack. Quickly overcoming the surprise, Tsukishima moves to get a deflection of Kai's spike. Hinata saves the ball, and Karasuno launches their synchronized attack. Even with five attackers, Kuroo quickly moves into place to block Daichi. As Hinata rotates off the court, Sugawara can't help but be impressed at how Kuroo was able to determine who would get the set. Hinata agrees but points out that Kuroo is one of the best blockers that Karasuno has faced and that Kuroo is the one who helped Tsukishima become the blocker he is now. Now facing one another, Kuroo teases Tsukishima while reminding him of how to have his hands when blocking. Tsukishima asks if Kuroo is feeling enough confidence that he would be giving Tsukishima advice, but Kuroo admits that he's just trying to get a rise out of the younger blocker.
When the score is 7-7, Lev serves, and Hinata makes the receive when the ball clips the top of the net. Daichi manages to spike past the double block. Lev receives the ball, but Yaku notices how shoddy it was. The ball is about to go over the net. Hinata attempts to get to it first, but Kuroo appears and taps it over. Kageyama saves it and is kept from setting. Nishinoya jumps for a libero set to Asahi, and the ace uses the set to deflect the ball off the blockers to score. As he moves onto the court, Yaku praises a grateful Nishinoya for getting better every time they meet.
After Asahi gets the next point, Tsukishima is rotating in while getting heated encouragement from Sugawara for Kuroo not to outdo him. Tsukishima brushes off the third-year's support as he willingly admits to Kuroo that he knows he doesn't stand a chance against him alone and knows he would need help to beat him—that help being Yamaguchi.

Yamaguchi performs a jump float and gets the first service ace when Yamamoto is unable to save the ball. Encouraged to get another service ace, Yamaguchi serves, but Kai uses an overhand receive to stop the float serve. Despite this, Tsukishima notices how the Nekoma team is in disarray and only two people are available to attack. Hurrying to the side and remembering what Kuroo told him about hand placement, Tsukishima stuffs Fukunaga and gets the point. In a rare display of public celebration, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi high-five while Yaku kicks Kuroo and blames him for Tsukishima's improvement. As everyone moves back into position, Kuroo asks Tsukishima how he feels about volleyball. The first-year admits that, thanks to everyone present, he occasionally has fun. Yamaguchi serves a third time but is stopped due to Yaku's overhand receive and Kai's spike.
Yamamoto serves and Tanaka receives. The ball goes long and nearly over the net. Kuroo tries to get to it, but Kageyama beats him and uses one hand to set to Hinata. Yaku receives, and the ball once more is long. Asahi and Kai both reach for the ball, but Asahi gets it down for the point. Hinata serves next. Fukunaga receives, and Kuroo attempts to land a spike, but Tanaka manages to save it. Kageyama sends the ball to Asahi. The ace delivers a powerful spike that Yaku is unable to dig. Though Fukunaga and Kuroo try to keep the ball going, the ball doesn't make it back over the net.
Nekomata sees how the players are finding joy in playing against a strong and respectable opponent. However, he knows Kenma is the one exception to this, as the setter is trying to figure out how to strip a crow of its feathers. With the score at 17-20, Suguru comments on how Nekoma is managing to keep up. At Mika's confusion, Suguru explains that Nekoma typically uses the first set to study their opponents and figure out how to counter certain plays, which will help them catch up in points. While they are still doing that, Nekoma also seems determined to keep an even pace with Karasuno.
During a rally, Lev and Kageyama get into a joust. Kuroo silently urges Lev to use his greater physical strength to beat Kageyama, but this plea goes unheeded as Kageyama gets the ball down. Yamamoto manages to save the ball, but it heads out of bounds. To everyone's surprise, Kenma rushes forward and sends the set back to Lev. The middle blocker scores, and Yamamoto compliments Kenma for doing better than Kageyama. Instead of being flattered, Kenma finds this insulting, as he acknowledges Kageyama as someone who works extremely hard to perfect his techniques and is on a greater skill level than Kenma. Still, Kenma does admit that he finds it exciting when he gets to be part of something so chaotic.
At 20-21, Kenma performs a short serve. Hinata receives it and hopes Kageyama will compliment him, but this doesn't happen. Instead, Kageyama sets to Tanaka, who scores past the blockers. Kageyama proceeds to scold Hinata for wanting praise for his receive.
After several more rallies, the score is 25-25. Both sides feverishly attempt to score but are thwarted at every opportunity. Nekoma tries to get the ball back over when Kenma is given the last hit. The setter appears to attempt a setter dump, which causes Tsukishima and Asahi to jump and block just when Kenma raises his other hand to set. The referee calls the block a foul. Nekoma is granted the point and is at the set point.

Kai serves. Karasuno saves and counters with the synchronized attack. After several returns to the other side, Kenma gets the ball and sets it in Karasuno's direction. Kageyama moves forward to get ready to set as the others move back. Unfortunately, this leaves an open area for the ball to land and win the set for Nekoma. The play utterly stuns many watching but, at the same time, finds Kenma's strategy of using Karasuno's movements to Nekoma's advantage to be a genius play.
As the teams switch sides, a continued flashback of the opening flashback shows Kuroo finding Kenma talking to Hinata. As he approaches, he hears Kenma mention how Nekoma has lost some of their glory but admits that he thinks the current generation is amazing. This surprises Kuroo and he calls out to Kenma right as Hinata is asking what team Kenma is part of. Kenma bids Hinata farewell but mentions how they will see each other soon. As they walk away, Kuroo mentions how rare it is for Kenma to speak to strangers given how he barely talks to people he already knows.

As the teams switch sides and prepare for the next set, Bokuto and Akaashi wonder if Kenma's strategy hit Karasuno harder than they suspect. Meanwhile, Kenma speaks to his team that he knows they must enjoy racking up points through serves and spikes but reminds them that this is not what they specialize in. Remembering how Kuroo once told him that it's not possible to completely shut out every attack, Kenma admits that he knows Hinata is going to eventually get points, but that Nekoma will need to limit those points as soon as possible.

"Stay interesting, Shoyo."
The second set begins, and Fukunaga serves. When Hinata receives, Sugawara right away notices that Nekoma is shutting down Hinata's quick attack by doing this and thinks Hinata won't be able to attack, but Hinata proves otherwise when he dashes around Kageyama and spikes past Lev. Tanaka praises Hinata for scoring, while Kenma realizes that Hinata wasn't needed for that play but thinks Kageyama is sending a message by doing so anyway. Kageyama silently confirms Kenma's suspicion as the setter's glare at each other. After assuring Fukunaga that he wasn't at fault, Kenma calls out to Hinata and asks his friend to never stop surprising him. Kenma's attitude instantly puts Hinata on edge as he jumps back and stares Kenma down.
As the game continues, Yachi is starting to succumb to her nerves at the possibility of Karasuno losing the set. She is brought out of her thoughts when Bokuto can tell what she is thinking and tells her not to worry about the future but instead focus on what is taking place in that moment and see how strong Karasuno has become.
At Shiratorizawa Academy, Goshiki is watching the game on his tablet when Tendō notices how Karasuno is struggling. Observing the next play, Tendō remarks how good Nekoma is but admits that he would not want to face them in a match. With Karasuno struggling to score, Tendō can tell the players must be getting frustrated. Hearing the commentator describe everything taking place with excitement, Tendō remarks that the man doesn't notice that Karasuno is fighting back in ways he doesn't notice.
As Nishinoya receives the ball, the others begin another synchronized attack. Tanaka spikes and scores, leading the team to celebrate and make Tendō see why he dislikes Karasuno. Exhausted, Asahi and Tanaka wearily ask what set they're in, as they think they're playing a five-set match but hear Hinata and Kageyama correct them by saying they're still in the early stage of the second set. On Nekoma's side, Lev mutters how he hates the synchronized attacks. Kenma waves off Lev's comment by reminding him that Karasuno attacking so much is surely taking a toll on their stamina but realizes this also means the same for Nekoma.
In the next play, Hinata rushes to the side with Lev following. Attempting a block-out, Hinata misses, and the ball lands out. Lev joyfully believes that Hinata was scared going against Lev, but Kenma and Kageyama stop the two. As Karasuno keeps the score at 12-15 in their favor, Lev shuts down Hinata's spike. This turned out to be part of a warning Kenma laid out in the last play.
During a break, Lev questions how Kenma knew to put a triple block against Hinata and that the setter could be scary when he's right like this. Kenma points out how Hinata has been playing differently this match. As he begins explaining, Nishinoya tells Karasuno that Nekoma is using him to limit Hinata's running paths and uses the previous play to explain how Nekoma forced Nishinoya to make a receive that blocked Hinata from attempting another slide attack. Kenma tells his team the same while adding that keeping Hinata from attacking will build frustration and cause him to make more mistakes.

As the timeout ends, Ukai passes a word of advice to Kageyama before he goes back onto the court. Fukunaga serves, and Hinata once more receives. Although he rushes into place for an attack, Asahi scores the next point. After a few more plays, Hinata rotates to the back row after not getting to score while in the front row. Hinata eventually rotates off the court and is so stressed that he has to be reminded to rotate back on. At the same time, Sugawara switches in for Tsukishima and does his best to inspire his teammates to keep their fighting spirit up.
When Nekoma counters Sugawara's serve, Karasuno's setters switch positions and put Kageyama into attacking position. Sugawara senses Lev ready to block and sends the set to the side to Kageyama. The ball is received, and Kenma sends a short set to Karasuno as the players are backing up, ready to attack. Hinata dives and makes the receive but is now a step behind to properly attack. Tanaka spikes but Yaku receives. The ball heads back to Karasuno, and Hinata tries to secure his approach, but he slips on sweat on the floor and cannot rush forward. Lev blocks Asahi and gains the point to take the lead.
While the floor is being cleaned, Kuroo notices how uninterested Kenma appears to be, even though his plan is working perfectly. At the same time, Kageyama wonders if it would be too risky to use Hinata given what's going on. Hinata recalls when Washijō had told him that he wasn't much of a threat without Kageyama when Sugawara compliments his receive and encouraged him to continue playing. Before the next rally starts, Kenma is aware how hurt Hinata must be at the moment, while Hinata acknowledges that Kenma is the reason he is not attacking and that he needs to figure out a way to overcome being restrained.

Fukunaga's serve accidentally clips the net and Hinata receives. Kenma suspects that this might be the moment that Hinata will give up and thus secure Nekoma's victory. However, Hinata pushes himself up and Kageyama calls for Hinata to jump his highest jump. As Kageyama sets a high ball for the center, Hinata secures his running approach. Feeling the restrictions lifted, Hinata perfectly uses his new jump and spikes above the triple block, scoring at last. Although many notice Hinata jumping higher than usual, Kenma is the most surprised by what he just witnessed. He begins to realize that Hinata is adapting and using new methods to overcome his planning. He looks over to Nekomata, who is thrilled to see the look on Kenma's face.
When Kageyama's serve lands out, Kai is subbed out and Inuoka is brought in. Kenma warns Lev and Inuoka that Hinata is able to stay in the air longer than them and that they will need to watch the timing of their blocks. The game continues and Hinata is ready to spike. Although Lev jumps a second early and Hinata sees an opening, Inuoka jumps to deflect although he bumped into Lev in the process. Thanks to Kageyama and Tanaka keeping the ball going, Hinata gets another chance to attack and successfully does a block-out against Lev's hand.

Karasuno is now at set point, and Hinata moves to serve. Kageyama wonders if Kuroo will be getting the set but spots Inuoka getting it instead. Tsukishima noticed this as well and gets a one touch. Karasuno performs another synchronized attack with all attackers, but Kuroo and Inuoka correctly read that Asahi will get the set. After Karasuno returns the chance ball, Nekoma does their own synchronized attack. Yamamoto spikes past the block, but Hinata receives. The force behind it sends the ball back to Nekoma's side, and it lands in a vacant spot, winning the set for Karasuno.
Karasuno showers Hinata with praise for his save and winning the set, while what happened shocks Nekoma. Hinata scoring on defense and taking away Nekoma's chance at victory especially overwhelms Akane. Alisa does her best to keep Akane in high spirits. However, the young girl is more frightened that the winner of the second set usually has the momentum in their favor, and it's worse now that Hinata has broken free from Nekoma's plan to limit his attacks.
While preparing for the third set, Lev tries to assure his team that he will score twenty points, but Kuroo calms him down by stating how it's better to focus on a smaller, more doable amount, and any extra points gained will be a bonus. Kai then points out how quiet Yamamoto is being and urges the ace to be fired up as he usually is while complimenting how amazing his line shot was. The captain continues being supportive of his teammates when Kenma claims he's rather talkative, something Kuroo wasn't when he and Kenma first met but slowly changed the more comfortable he got with those around him.
In their childhood, Kuroo would demonstrate to Kenma how to receive a ball properly. Kenma suggests Kuroo find someone better than him to play volleyball with, as he figures it must be boring playing against someone as inexperienced as him. Kuroo quickly denies that Kenma is a bad player and states how he is a fast learner and quick thinker. With Kuroo having originally been more shy and withdrawn than Kenma at the time, Kuroo struggled to meet others who might be interested in volleyball until Kenma agreed to accompany him to a weekend camp. Even at eight years old, Kuroo proved to be an exceptional receiver. Kenma had pointed out older kids spiking and suggested Kuroo try. Kuroo admits that he would, but admits that spiking is easier when one is taller.
A voice behind them suggests a solution of lowering the net for those who want to better improve their abilities in something they find enjoyable, the man being Coach Nekomata. His words had an impact on Kuroo, as he was then seen joining others in spiking practice. He naturally had trouble perfecting the timing and form to spike but quickly improved until he got a spike over the net. Since that moment, Kuroo began to shed his shy nature and became more involved with volleyball, even repeatedly inviting Kenma to play and watch recordings of matches. Seeing Kenma become excited at witnessing a professional player use the glance feint, Kuroo suggests Kenma join his team as a setter. He tells Kenma that setters do not move around much and are masters of strategy; Kenma quickly learned the minimal movement part was exaggerated.
One day, Kuroo had been with others as they rushed to the park to play soccer when Kenma's father got Kuroo's attention. Asking Kuroo if he could invite Kenma to play soccer every so often, Kuroo admits that he would like to but suspects that Kenma does not enjoy soccer and doesn't want to make him do something he does not enjoy. However, Kuroo does feel that Kenma gives his all to something he enjoys, so there won't be much concern.
Exiting his flashback, Kenma admits to Kuroo that if he always acted like a party animal, he most likely would not be playing volleyball with him. The comment startles Kuroo, but the captain feels better when Kenma confesses he does enjoy the feeling like he should be there. Kuroo gathers the team together and encourages them to reap the reward of all their hard work. Karasuno as well pump themselves up for Nekoma not to outdo them. Knowing this is the final chance to win, the teams return to the court, and the final set begins.
As the next few rallies play out, each side remembers different points when they faced their fated rival and the bonds they've made along the way. At Kuroo's next serve, Asahi tries to spike, but Lev directs his spike to go right to Kuroo. However, Karasuno would get the point in the end when Tsukishima gets his spike past Lev and Kuroo narrowly misses making a receive.

Midway into the set, with the score at 25-27 and Karasuno leading, Kenma just barely gets his arms up to keep Hinata's spike from directly hitting his face. Fukunaga keeps the ball in play and gives Kenma the last hit. Kenma gets the ball over the net. Hinata barely manages to save it, but Kenma hits the ball back down. Tanaka is unable to get the ball up, and Nekoma gains the point. Noticing Kenma's gleeful expression, Yamamoto remembers when he had asked Kenma about his friendship with Hinata. He had asked if Kenma is rivals with Hinata, but Kenma insists that he and Hinata are regular friends.
As Inuoka is subbing with Kai, Coach Nekomata speaks to Teshiro about how he will subbing with Lev when the middle blocker is up to serve and asks if the first-year setter is ready. Teshiro answers that he is not ready to enter the chaos before him, which Nekomata amusedly understands. Soon, Teshiro moves onto the court and realizes that this means Kenma will stay the setter for the remainder of the set despite his exhaustion. Teshiro delivers a ceiling serve, but Karasuno manages to counter. Asahi appears like he will get a deflection, but Fukunaga jumps over a barrier to save the ball. As the ball heads to him, Kenma begins to panic about what to do, but, when he sees Kuroo appear, he knows what to do and sets to his friend.

Nishinoya makes a close receive, and Hinata rushes forward. Going against three blockers, several players notice him switch from a spike to a feint. Kenma notices as well and hurries forward. Unfortunately, he went too far forward and missed saving the ball. He momentarily collapses from how long the match is lasting. Kuroo checks on the setter and hears Kenma admit how much fun he's having. This surprises everyone who heard him, but Hinata is thrilled hearing Kenma finally enjoying volleyball.
As the game continues and each side scores, Kenma understands how Hinata feels when playing against someone, comparing it to when he fights a final boss in a video game and doesn't want the fight to end so soon. Karasuno eventually reaches match point, and everyone is visibly exhausted but continuing to push themselves forward.
As Kenma and Lev try to block, Lev accidentally bumps into Kenma and knocks him over. However, Kenma snaps at Lev to keep the ball going. After Kenma saves the ball, he feels the exhaustion of the match weigh on him and how painful it is just to breath but finds this is the most fun he's had in a long time and doesn't want it to end.
Kai saves the ball and sends it to Kenma. The second-year prepares to set but, when the ball touches his hands, it slips from his grasp due to the sweat covering it and lands before anyone can save it. With this, Karasuno is named the winner.

Although Karasuno has finally beaten their rival, everyone is too worn out to properly celebrate and simply take the moment to collect themselves. Kuroo approaches Kenma and hears the setter express how much fun he had before expressing gratitude to Kuroo for introducing him to the sport. Kuroo is rendered momentarily speechless but manages to laugh in the end. As Nekoma lines up, Kenma guesses that he'll come down with a fever while Teshiro tells Lev how he hopes to be on the court with them again.
As the two teams meet to shake hands, Tendō guesses that Goshiki will hit numerous serves out of bounds if he ever faces Nekoma but also mentions that he would most likely first have to face Hinata. Goshiki declares that he will not let Hinata beat him.
After Daichi and Kuroo thank the referees, the captains and their teammates begin thanking one another and giving support for how they played. After Takeda tearfully shakes hands with Nekomata, Ukai shakes hands with the older coach. At the same time, Ikkei holds his hand out as if to shake hands with his longtime friend.
After the teams thank their supporters, Nekomata announces that he will save any criticism for later and gives the team his thanks for doing their best and getting to this point. With tears in their eyes, the players bow to their coach and thank him.
As they move off the court, Yaku is still coming to terms that this was their final match while Kai voices how he's grateful that he got to have this journey with Kuroo and Yaku. The statement immediately sends the two into tears. Hinata finds Kenma and tries to request they play like this again the following year, but Kageyama steals his thunder by making the request. With their coaches witnessing, Kenma agrees to a rematch the following year.
In the post-credit scene, the Nekoma third-years are walking through the crowd when they run into Suguru and Mika. Mika excuses herself and Suguru right away takes the chance to rub Nekoma's loss in their face but states that it is highly unlikely that a team can wholeheartedly believe they will be the ones to win. But when the trio do not become upset like he wanted, Suguru starts getting frustrated as Kuroo begins recording his expression until Mika catches him.
Back in the arena, Kamomedai claims victory in their match. Hoshiumi walks over to Hinata and issues the challenge to let their match determine which of them is the true Little Giant.
