"Hirugami's Animals" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the fifty-fifth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on September 14, 2020 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

Kamomedai is suddenly faced with a variety of animals that Hirugami has taken in.

Plot[]

While leaving the school, Hirugami suddenly remembers something. Gao and Hoshiumi ask what's bothering him and Hirugami answers that he forgot to lock the clubroom door where he's secretly been keeping an animal he's taken in.

Hoshiumi is startled to hear that Hirugami has been hiding an animal at the school instead of his own house. Hirugami explains that he had no choice but to keep the animal at the school since he already has a dog at home. Gao expresses that Hirugami's emotions reflect his immovable reputation and suggests that the middle blocker hurries to lock the club room before anyone finds out. Unfortunately, Hirugami notices that the suggestion was made too late as the animal has already escaped and asks Gao and Hoshiumi to catch it as it is heading in their direction. Thinking the animal may be a cat, the two prepare to catch the animal but are shocked to see an American bison heading right for them.

At the next volleyball practice, Coach Murphy reminds the team of all their training regarding mental fortitude and always thinking of what they should do next. At this, he asks the team what they should do with the bison that has entered the gym. The team answers that they can't do anything about the bison and ask why the coach can't do anything instead. Murphy simply answers that he cannot since he has a wife and daughter waiting for him.

After getting brief information about the bison, the group is concerned at how much bigger the animal is compared to them and decide the best course of action is to use a decoy and narrow it down to Hoshiumi and Gao. The two right away begin to debate which of them should be the decoy, Gao stating that Hoshiumi is smaller and faster and Hoshiumi states that Gao's large stature will be more suited. As they continue to argue, Hirugami appears and casually takes the bison away. Before leaving, he asks the others if they can care for the rest until he returns.

In the midst of confusion at Hirugami's words, Gao suddenly spots a platypus behind them. He quickly picks up the animal when Suwa looks up what it is and that it actually has poison in the tusks of its back legs. Hearing this, Gao drops the platypus before it does him any harm. When Hoshiumi seems to get that the smaller animals have weapons in order to survive, Gao comments how Hoshiumi would be the one to relate. Before the two fight again, Hirugami announces that he's managed to catch a few others, namely a shrew, slow loris, and a Haitian solenodon.

Hirugami suddenly makes a statement that he may retire from volleyball after high school and will pursue a career in animal care, remarking how he has gotten lots of practice around Gao and Hoshiumi. Peeking from behind a door, Coach Murphy asks if all of the animals have been gathered. Hirugami answers that only one animal is left, a Miyagi-Tanaka monkey. A description of the monkey states that the monkey has a quick temper, harsh glare, and isn't too bright. One other thing it does have is extremely poisonous spit. With his hands full with the smaller animals he is holding, Hirugami tells them that he managed to get the monkey the first time using a picture of a female manager with dark hair and glasses.

Suwa pulls up a random photo that happens to be of Kiyoko. The monkey and Nozawa both are captivated by the picture. Hoshiumi suddenly notices that the monkey and Hirugami seem to actually be communicating. Hirugami turns to the ace spiker and states that the monkey has called him tiny. Angered, Hoshiumi aims to prove who he is and spikes a ball toward the monkey but is shocked to see him make a receive.

After several more rounds, Hoshiumi admits that the monkey is actually pretty good. Just then, a caretaker from the animal shelter appears and grabs the monkey. He thanks them for the call he received earlier and promises that he will get the primate back to the shelter. As Hirugami casually says goodbye, Gao comments how his emotions reflect his immovable nickname and their teammates declaring they never want to go through a situation like that again.
