"Kamomedai Heartthrobs" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Certain members of Kamomedai wonder why they are not more popular with girls.
Plot[]
On a seemingly-normal day at practice, Nozawa suddenly questions why he is not more popular among the female population of their school. Suwa argues that if Nozawa openly talks about things like that, he will never become popular. Nozawa remarks how their coach is always stating that they need to make success a habit and believes this should also be applied to their love life. However, Suwa doesn't think that this is what their coach meant.
He questions Nozawa on his sudden worry about being popular. Nozawa answers that because he is in the prime of his life and part of the volleyball team, he cannot miss out on the impact this can have on both his popularity status and his love life. Hirugami debates that Nozawa shouldn't worry too much and remarks that it wouldn't be the end of the world if he made a mistake regarding his romantic interests.
Nozawa soon begins a rant about the human nature of wanting to be superior to others which is the reason many try to dress well, graduate from top-ranked universities, and keep in shape to maintain attractive appearances. He soon comes to the realization that the second-years are most likely the most popular on the team, stating that Hirugami and Hoshiumi have no trouble in how they present themselves and that Hakuba's overall height is his greatest asset. Nozawa states that the third-years have no chance when compared to their underclassmen.
Nozawa tries to figure out what it is that separates the third-years from the second-years and bluntly questions Hoshiumi on how he can decrease his height, of which Hoshiumi becomes angered over. Nozawa tries to explain his theory and states that Hoshiumi's short height is just right where girls their age wouldn't be afraid of him. When Suwa tries to get Nozawa to think that height may not be the main factor, Nozawa switches his belief to the second-years different hair styles. He asks how Hoshiumi gets his hair in its unique style. The ace answers that he doesn't really do much and that it mostly relies on genetics, showing a picture of his mother who has the same hair texture as himself and soon becomes creeped out when Nozawa says his mother is cute.
Deciding that Hoshiumi isn't the best reference to use, Nozawa moves over to Hirugami. Even though the middle blocker claims he is not very popular, Nozawa believes that he is due to having a pet and that his own hair style adds to his overall status. Like Hoshiumi, Hirugami says that his hair is mostly due to genetics as well and shows a picture of himself with his siblings to show they have similar hair. Like Hoshiumi, he becomes disturbed when Nozawa says that Hirugami's older sister is cute.
Hirugami says that Nozawa shouldn't use him as a reference and should be asking Hakuba instead since he always seems to have girls glancing in his direction. Surprised at thinking that he is popular, Hakuba becomes irritated when Hoshiumi claims that it's his large size that makes others take caution when he is walking around them. Hakuba argues that tall height is attractive to some but overhears Suwa state that Hakuba has other things going for him besides his incredible height. Hoping to hear things from Suwa, Hakuba becomes upset when all he hears is that he is a good person and thinks this is just an excuse people use when there is nothing else nice to say. Kanbayashi states that someone being a good person is not the sole reason that makes them attractive to another. Becoming more frustrated, Hakuba asks if his hair is stylish, but Hirugami and Hoshiumi answer that mohawks actually have the opposite effect when it comes to girls and will cause them to think he is a hoodlum.
At his own breaking point, Hakuba asks Nozawa to help him become popular to girls. Bessho quietly expresses how he would like to become popular too but feels that it would be too embarrassing if he were to become like Nozawa and Hakuba. Deciding to take things into their own hands, Nozawa and Hakuba leave in order to improve their chances of becoming popular.
The next day, Nozawa and Hakuba appear and have changed their hair to be a stylized combination of Hoshiumi's spiky hair, Hirugami's soft perm, Nozawa's own perm, and Hakuba's mohawk. The two state that these new styles will surely increase their popularity but some of the others ask how they think this will work. Nozawa and Hakuba answer that they did a survey to see who on the team would be the one girls would want to date most.
After tallying the results of the survey, Nozawa and Hakuba are shocked to see that Suwa has the most votes by a large margin. The other players figure that it's because of Suwa's mature, kind, and reliable demeanor that makes him so popular. Nozawa continues to hold onto the belief that kindness cannot be the only reason that makes someone so likeable. He and Hakuba both conclude that Suwa's shaved hairstyle is probably what girls like most.
As they decide they must shave their heads to match Suwa, Coach Murphy points out how people like Nozawa and Hakuba are the type to not see past the surface of things and, as a result, are the least popular. Hirugami reveals that he had a shaved head in middle school but wasn't popular. Hoshiumi points out that his low popularity was most likely due to his scary and sometimes-dark aura.
