"Karasuno Neighborhood Association Lottery" (Japanese: 烏野 (からすの) 町内会 (ちょうないかい) 福引 (ふくび) 大会 (たいかい) Karasuno Chōnaikai Fukubiki Taikai) is the forty-second chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on March 30, 2020 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

The Neighborhood Association holds a lottery in the shopping district. At learning what one of the prizes is, Yamaguchi becomes determined to win the prize at all costs.

Plot[]

Shimada holds a meeting with other shop owners concerning prizes that are to be offered during a ticket lottery. He pleads with the other men to provide better awards than they had the previous year which begins a challenge of who will have the better prize this year.

At the shopping district, Yamaguchi receives a ticket to participate in a lottery since he had a purchase of over one thousand yen. He and Tsukishima decide to head over to where the lottery is being held and sees that Shimada and the other store owners are holding the lottery. Tsukishima voices his displeasure of the lottery, telling Yamaguchi that he had won one dozen crow repellents last year and found the prize to be garbage.

Takinoue assures the two that they have managed to get better prizes this year. He announces that his second-place prize is a 42-inch television. This interests Yamaguchi until Takinoue presents a large CRT television that the two first-years find outdated. Takinoue adds that if they manage to win the television, they will actually win ten of the item and that attempting to recycle it will cost them so they will basically have no choice but to keep it. While Takinoue and Shimada are proud of their efforts, Yamaguchi hopes he doesn't win the second-place prize.

Uchizawa appears and offers to show his fifth-place prize. He shows the two teens his Mega Clean soap that is so effective it turns a black jacket stark white in one wash. Thinking Yamaguchi and Tsukishima might not be too interested in washing soap, Shimada presents the fourth-place prize that is a statue of the Shimada Market mascot that he had custom-made for the lottery.

After learning that the first-place prize is a trip to the hot springs, Tsukishima asks what the third-place prize is. Surprised that the two hadn't been told this by Ukai, Shimada answers that they have a variety of bromides of the Karasuno boys' volleyball team that had been requested by fans of the team. As Tsukishima questions if this is allowed without their prior knowledge and consent, Yamaguchi figures that twelve of the fourteen photos are of the volleyball players but wonders what the extra two are. He quickly guesses that the two extra photos must be of the team managers. Excited at the thought of gaining Yachi's picture, Yamaguchi convinces Tsukishima that they should stay and participate in the lottery to show their thanks for everything the older men have done for them. Even though Tsukishima suspects that Yamaguchi has ulterior motives for wanting to stay, he decides to stay as Yamaguchi uses his lottery ticket and instantly receives third place. His excited reaction causes Tsukishima to firmly believe that the pinch server has a photo in mind that he wants to win.

Yamaguchi excitedly opens the wrapping but is disappointed to see that it's of Tanaka. Unsure of what to do with the picture, Yamaguchi is suddenly approached by Saeko in disguise. She offers to give Yamaguchi thirty lottery tickets in exchange for Tanaka's bromide. With more tickets at his disposal, Yamaguchi goes another round and again wins third place. This time, his bromide is of Tsukishima.

Tsukishima attempts to get Yamaguchi to throw the photo away until Yamaguchi is again approached by someone who offers to trade the photo for fifty lottery tickets. Yamaguchi and Tsukishima quickly figure out that this new person is Akiteru. While Tsukishima interrogates his brother, Yamaguchi keeps playing. He again wins another bromide, but this one is of Daichi. Again, Yamaguchi is approached and is offered one hundred tickets in exchange for the bromide by Michimiya. Yamaguchi continues playing and even manages to win first place but is solely focused on winning third place.

Down to his last ticket, Yamaguchi finally wins one of the extra bromides. Hopeful that the package contains Yachi's photo, Yamaguchi is soon confused at seeing that it contains the photo of Karasuno's former captain, Hiroki Kurokawa. Hearing that the other secret bromide was a photo of Hidemi Tashiro, Yamaguchi collapses in defeat as Shimada boasts about how well the lottery had done. Takinoue points out that he feels it was so successful thanks to a select few people.
