"Karasuno Shopping Avenue’s Test of Courage" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the seventy-seventh chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on August 2, 2021 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

The store owners of the Karasuno shopping district are hoping to create new and fun memories for the local youth's with a Test of Courage. However, they can't seem to come together about what the younger generation consider fun or scary.

Plot[]

All of the local shop owner's of the Karasuno district gather together and listen as Shimada announces the idea of a Test of Courage in hopes of revitalizing the shopping district. Ukai questions if a Test of Courage is really a good idea. Shimada tries to convince him it's a good idea since it will cause those who go through it to always remember the shopping district with good flashbacks. However, Ukai points out how the term 'flashbacks' normally refer to traumatizing memories.

Shimada is not discouraged and tries to get the other merchants to suggest ideas. Saeko begins suggesting things that are related to a beach trip and mentions how fun the activities are. Shimada and Takinoue seems to disagree as they admit that they always remember the brutal trainings that Ikkei Ukai put them through during their summer breaks several years earlier.

Shimada realizes that because they never got to really experience fun summer breaks, they cannot understand what the younger ones see as fun. Deciding to list everything that could scare the younger generation, the older men still cannot help but think of Ikkei even though Ukai points out that they're the only ones scared of his grandfather. With several ideas of spiritual elements failing, Saeko and Akiteru suggest things closer to their age range but are still not sure these would work.

Eventually, Shimada suggests that a theme and costume best fitting each of their businesses would work best. Saeko becomes excited at the idea and suggests that she can ride around on her motorcycle dressed as a headless rider. Ukai and Takinoue point out how the idea would cause real fear if she were to do such a thing.

Shimada seems pleased that they have several ideas that they can use but Ukai points out how some of these aren't really fitting for the Test of Courage and would like one more thing added to the list that would be scary. Shimada suggests that they recruit Asahi but Ukai declines since he fears they would upset the ace.

Some time later, Takinoue, dressed as a zombie and groaning out the name of his store, attempts to scare the Hinata siblings but notices that they weren't really scared. Even knowing they aren't that scary, Shimada is pleased that they're creating good memories for the young ones. As they debate other ways to contribute, they notice Tanaka and Kiyoko walking down the path together. Even seeing how the pair seem mismatched, they do notice that Tanaka is clearly acting the role of protector and decide to give their best performance to make memories for the two.

As Tanaka notices that Kiyoko is remaining her calm and collected self, Tanaka is upset that she hasn't grabbed onto him in fear. He soon hears counting and sees the owner of the Osuwari restaurant counting papers. Thinking that she is the famous plate counting ghost, Tanaka quickly becomes terrified when he hears her state that he has failed his last five tests. He quickly tries to usher Kiyoko away as she tries to question if he really has failed that many tests.

Tanaka spots Takinoue and Shimada attempting to chase them and are soon joined by the other store owners in their own respective costumes. Tanaka continues to panic since the men keep targeting him and calling him by name. Just as Tanaka is starting to feel winded from all the running and yelling, he notices Ikkei among the crowd and yelling how the youth of today has no work ethic. Although Tanaka doesn't recognize Ikkei, he finds him the most terrifying of all.

After the two manage to get away, they are approached by Sugawara asking if they want to go to the shopping district. Ukai overhears Tanaka exclaim how hearing the words 'shopping district' brings up horrible memories and suspects that their plan to revitalize the shopping district may have backfired.
