Karasuno vs Date Tech was a match that took place during the 2nd round of the 2012 Miyagi Interhigh Prelims. The match ended in Karasuno's victory in straight sets.

Match[]

Set 1[]

Kamasaki serves first and Daichi receives it. Oiwake watches Kageyama's movements as he sends the ball to Hinata. However, Aone and Futakuchi are ready and jump to block him. Hinata is caught off-guard and glances the ball off the blockers, barely scoring the first point. Kageyama hits a powerful serve, but it goes straight to Sakunami. Moniwa and Aone perform a quick attack that is received by Noya. Tanaka sends the ball to Asahi in the back, but Aone and Futakuchi are ready and shut him down. Noya apologizes and Asahi says not to worry. During the next play, Tanaka spikes but is blocked. However, Aone touched the net, and Karasuno gained another point. The same situation happens to Asahi, only this time, the ball lands out, and Karasuno manages to gain a 2-point lead.

The next time Hinata goes for a quick attack, he attempts a cross, but Aone reads the attack and sticks his hand out to block Hinata. Afterward, Kageyama tells Hinata that they're going to do the super version of the quick attack. They soon succeed in doing so, scoring untouched. The two continue to use the attack, and the point gap continues to increase.

Eventually, the score reaches 18-15, with Futakuchi up to serve. Karasuno performs a three-man decoy attack, where Hinata lures Aone and Obara into blocking, only for Asahi to come up from behind. He spikes untouched. Karasuno and the Karasuno Girls' are seen cheering.

The score reaches 22-19. Karasuno scores 3 consecutive points and wins the set 25-19.

Set 2[]

Before the start of the 2nd set, Ukai explains his plan to move Hinata two places up in the rotation to prevent having many encounters with Aone.

The set starts and Date Tech scores the 1st point after Sasaya spikes from the right side. Asahi spikes back afterward but is quickly blocked during the next play. Right now, the score is 4-4, Date Tech still technically leading. Despite this, Karasuno continues to attack and gains a 2-point lead at 12-10.

Date Tech catches up after Asahi attempts to spike through the gap between Aone and Moniwa's arms, but Aone moves his hands to block. Karasuno gains the advantage and is at match point, 24-21. Date Tech gets another point after Hinata misses a serve. Asahi attempts a spike, but it's blocked by Moniwa and the ball goes towards the back. However, Noya is there and manages to save it, but the ball is too close to the net and Aone beats Asahi in a joust. Realizing he can't save it with his hands, Nishinoya sticks out his foot at the last second and saves the ball, shocking the entire audience. Asahi gets a running approach and is able to spike past the blockers, causing the ball to land on top of the net and land on Date's side, winning the match for Karasuno.

Aftermath[]

While Karasuno celebrates their victory, Moniwa explains that he and the rest of the 3rd years are retiring and promises that Futakuchi and Aone will handle the team well.

In an OVA scene not shown in the anime and an extra chapter in the manga, Futakuchi and Aone overhear the three 3rd years talking about how they want to stay on the team but then declare that Date Tech will have the best Iron Wall when the Spring Tournament comes around.

Before they leave, Karasuno notices Aoba Johsai is about to finish their 1st set 23-14 and see that Oikawa is up to serve.
