Karasuno vs Johzenji was a match held during the first round of the Spring Qualifiers tournament. The match ended in Karasuno's victory in straight sets.

Prologue[]
Outside the Sendai City Gymnasium, Hinata runs towards the entrance but runs into Terushima. Terushima notices that if Hinata is there, then so is Kiyoko. He then yells towards Kiyoko, saying that she forgot to give him her number. Tanaka and Nishinoya then sprint toward him angrily but stop when Johzenji's manager, Misaki, shows up and apologizes. Terushima then says he'll see Karasuno on the court later.
Kageyama remembers that Johzenji was one of the top 4 teams from the Interhigh. Hinata adds that all the 16 schools in the tournament were strong enough to make it here, but they will still defeat them all.
Later on, Hinata goes to the bathroom, but remembers the several times he's met scary people at a bathroom. He's careful and hesitant about entering, until Oikawa and Iwaizumi show up behind him. Hinata then gets super scared by them. Iwaizumi praises Hinata and his team for defeating Kakugawa in the prelims.
Oikawa, however, comments that Hinata is a pain during game time, and that they should finish him off right there. Hinata is frightened and runs away, only to run into Ushijima, who greets him. He then greets Oikawa and Iwaizumi who stare at him angrily. Ushijima wishes the two third-years good luck, as this will be their last tournament. However, Iwaizumi declares that Aoba Johsai will be going to Nationals, so it's not their last tournament, but Ushijima reminds them that only one team can represent Miyagi for the Nationals.
Hinata then declares that Karasuno will be the winner, angering all three of them. He then backs up into Aone, who frightens him. Ushijima then walks away, declaring that whoever he faces in the finals, Shiratorizawa will emerge victorious. Aone then greets Hinata in a friendly fashion.
Sometime later, Shiratorizawa, Aoba Johsai, and Date Tech win their first matches in straight sets. Karasuno's game is next and they head onto the court. Daichi tells Takeda and Ukai that Karasuno is serving first. Takeda realizes that everyone, especially the third-years, are more serious than before. Out of nowhere, Hinata is heard complimenting Tsukishima's new sports glasses. Tsukishima tells him that when he says something of his is "cool", it makes him feel less cool.
Tsukishima flashes back to when his brother, Akiteru, gave him the glasses. He told him that with them, face blocking won't be a problem, confusing the first-year. Akiteru then reminds him that Ushijima, despite his power, is still a human just like all of them, and that beating him is still possible. Back to present day, Daichi comments that the first-years seem more serious than them.
Both teams line up. Hinata remembers Terushima's comment from the prelims that if they face each other, it will be a real nice game. Both teams thank each other for the team and the match officially starts.
Set 1[]
The match starts with Asahi's serve. He hits a powerful serve and Numajiri barely receives it, causing Terushima to comment on its intense power. Tsuchiyu sends the ball to the back of Johzenji's side and Terushima goes to it. Karasuno predicts he's going to receive, but to their surprise, he spikes the ball and earns the first point. Tanaka is confused on how he hit it from the back, despite it being off-balance.
Bobata serves and Asahi receives it. Tanaka spikes from the left and Bobata receives it, but the ball hits the net. Futamata, however, sticks his leg up and kicks the ball up. Īzaka then hits the direct and scores the second point. Ennoshita comments on how Johzenji fits no pattern and determining what they'll do is nearly impossible. Bobata serves again but hits the net, giving Karasuno their first point. The Johzenji boys then mess with Bobata for his failed serve and call him a "dork." The ref gives them a warning whistle and Misaki tells them to calm down. She then comments on how the team can get out of hand really quickly. Anabara then reminds her that she's the only third-year left on the team and that with dealing with all the "lunatics" on Johzenji's team, she'll never get a break.
Tsukishima serves and Tsuchiyu receives it. Futamata and Īzaka perform a quick and score. Futamata then serves but clips the net. Tanaka receives the ball but it's going out of the court. Hinata manages to get it but he is also heading towards the wall. To everyone's surprise, Hinata bounces off the wall using his foot, causing someone to call him "Spider-Man". Nishinoya then hits the ball back to Johzenji's side and lands it, scoring a point. Sugawara then comments that: "If you're talking about guys who pull off crazy moves, Karasuno has a few." Kageyama serves and Higashiyama receives it, but the ball is flying long. Futamata performs a one-handed set and sends the ball to Numajiri, who spikes. Kageyama receives it but the ball goes over the net. Numajiri spikes a direct, but Daichi receives it. Hinata and Kageyama then perform their quick for the first time, and Karasuno catches up in the score. Both teams continue scoring.
Tanaka spikes and Numajiri receives it. Tsukishima thinks about who will attack. To his surprise, Futamata runs to the back and Higashiyama performs a set instead. Futamata then scores. The score is tied 17-17. Karasuno gains another point and Hinata rotates in. He gets a one-touch on Īzaka's spike and then he and Kageyama perform their quick and score, gaining Karasuno a two-point lead. During the next play, Kageyama notices Futamata running up for a direct. He jumps up to block and succeeds in doing so. However, he actually blocked with his face, causing his nose to bleed. Karasuno then calls a timeout.
Kageyama yells that he's fine and can play, but Ukai objects and says he needs to go to the infirmary to make sure everything is fine. Sugawara then tells Kageyama he'll be fine and to leave the game up to his upperclassmen. He then walks away angrily with Yamaguchi. The game resumes and Īzaka scores a quick shortly afterwards. Narita then subs in for Hinata. Ukai tells the first-year that Narita is playing as he has more experience with Sugawara as a setter. Hinata is seen getting fidgety, which is pointed out by Tsukishima. Hinata then expresses that he wants to play as there is still a ton to do throughout the game.
Narita and Sugawara perform a quick and score, and Karasuno cheers. Johzenji scores and Terushima is up to serve. He scores an ace and celebrates, angering Tanaka. However, Narita reminds Tanaka that he's the same way sometimes. Meanwhile, Kageyama comes back, and Yachi states that he's doing just fine. Despite this, Kageyama and Hinata still sit out for the set. Kageyama reminds Hinata about an earlier comment he made, stating that he would take care of the set while Kageyama was gone. Hinata gets angry, and tells him that he'll do more in the next set. Narita scores another quick. The score is 23-21, Karasuno's favor. After Narita picks up a ball, Karasuno performs a synchronized attack. Sugawara sets to Daichi, who scores, and gets Karasuno to set point. Terushima thinks the attack looked awesome and tells his team that they should do it next. Tsuchiyu receives the ball and Johzenji performs the attack. However, Terushima misses the ball, shocking Karasuno. With this, Karasuno wins the first set 25-21.
Set 2[]
The normal lineup starts in the second set. Sugawara warns a fired-up Hinata and Kageyama to calm down. Terushima then comments that he's glad Hinata's back on the court, as the game got boring while he was out. He then comments that he thinks Daichi is kinda dull. Hinata denies this and then comments that he couldn't defeat Terushima in a 1v1, but when he's with Karasuno, he can't lose.
Higashiyama serves and Nishinoya receives it. Hinata and Kageyama attempt their quick, but they get too excited, and Hinata swipes too early, completely missing the ball. However, Daichi receives the ball and sends it to Johzenji's side. Tsuchiyu receives the ball. Terushima then attempts a direct, but Daichi once again receives. Hinata and Kageyama perform their quick, and this time, they score. They apologize to Daichi for messing up, but Daichi says it's fine, and that he knew it would happen anyway. He then explains how despite not being able to pull off flashy moves, he can still create a solid foundation for his team as Captain. Terushima hears this and is reminded of Okudake. Daichi then tells the duo to play till their heart's content.
Karasuno continues to score and extend the lead. Terushima is blocked by Hinata and Daichi, but Futamata keeps the ball in play. Īzaka attempts a direct but Karasuno moves back and is able to receive it. Hinata and Kageyama perform their quick again and score, gaining Karasuno a five-point lead. Hinata serves but hits the net. The score is 15-11, with Terushima up to serve. He serves but lands the ball out. Daichi serves and aims between Tsuchiyu and Numajiri. They are hesitant, but Tsuchiyu receives the ball. Futamata attempts a direct, but hits the ball out. With this, Karasuno leads 17-11, and Johzenji calls a timeout.
While Terushima and his team yell at getting fired-up, Misaki yells at them for trying to rush everything. She requotes something Okudake said to Terushima: "There will be a time when things won't be fun and games." She then questions if the team is having fun while being behind several points, and reminds them that that kind of behavior will not end in victory. Anabara asks Misaki if she's okay. She then comments that Terushima and the others won't realize their mistakes unless someone says it to their face. She also reminds them that Okudake told her to "whip their *sses (censored) into shape". This shocks the team as she has never used that kind of language. Terushima then admits that the current situation isn't fun and that Karasuno is playing a lot more freely than they are. She then reminds them of what Okudake used to say, and that when serious times come, they have to get used to them. With this lecture, Johzenji is more serious and determined to win.
The match resumes. Higashiyama performs a feint and scores, the score being 19-15. Tsukishima spikes and Numajiri receives it. Futamata attempts another direct, and Kageyama jumps to block. At the last second, he sends the ball to Terushima in the back, who scores, shocking Karasuno and even Terushima himself. Takeda comments that Johzenji has been doing well since their timeout. Futamata attempts a direct, but Tsukishima shuts him down. With this, Hinata is rotated in. Terushima then comes up with a plan to counter Hinata's quick. Hinata runs up for a quick. However, some spectators notice that Hinata is being left unmarked by the blockers. Terushima realizes that receiving the attack will be easier than stopping it. Tsuchiyu receives Hinata's spike, and Terushima kicks the ball into the air. Numajiri then spikes untouched and scores, making the game only a 2-point gap (20-18).
Hinata is angered by this and tells Kageyama he has a plan for the next play. Hinata gets the ball. He notices an open space and spikes there, scoring untouched. Kageyama then scores a service ace, but misses the next serve. Tanaka scores a block-out. The score is 23-19. Hinata uses the same technique, only this time, Terushima receives from up close. Futamata and Īzaka then declare that if can touch the ball, then they can score. Īzaka scores. Daichi reminds Hinata that there's another attack he hasn't used yet. The next time Hinata goes to spike, he actually performs a feint, which scores. Karasuno reaches match point 24-20. Hinata serves and Tsuchiyu receives it. Johzenji then performs another synchronized attack. Terushima spikes untouched, but the ball goes out.
Karasuno wins.
Aftermath[]
Karasuno makes the Top 8 and advances to the quarterfinals.
Anabara tells the team that getting excited is great, but they need to learn to not get too excited during games. He also reminds them that Misaki won't be with them next year to knock some sense into them. Misaki then tells them to not give Runa much trouble as she's just a first-year. She then compliments their serious playstyle, making them blush. As she leaves, Terushima and the team thank her for her support.
Meanwhile, Aone meets Hinata outside the gym and vows that he will stop him during the next day, but Hinata says otherwise. They both smile and Hinata screams in excitement, with Kageyama telling him to shut up. On Court B, Wakutani Minami has completed their match against Ōgi Biz High School, and they are set to play Karasuno in the quarterfinals.
