Karasuno vs Ohgiminami was the second round and Karasuno's first match of the Miyagi Prefecture Spring High Preliminaries. The match ended in Karasuno's victory in straight sets.
Match[]
Prologue[]
Before Karasuno's match, Hinata goes to the bathroom after looking at the brackets. He is too busy singing his bathroom song that he runs into Towada, who yells at him to watch where he's going. Hinata apologizes before realizing Towada has an Ohgiminami jersey on and remembers that is the team Karasuno is facing in their first match.
Towada then assumes that Hinata is a middle schooler and shakes his head while apologizing for scaring him, as well as questioning if he's here to watch his big brother play. He then comments that his little brother has the same shirt as Hinata.
Hinata smacks his hand away and tells him that he's a 1st-year at Karasuno High School. He then yells that Karasuno is winning all the way to Nationals. Towada questions his comment and says that getting to Nationals is easier said than done. Hinata, however, tells him again, but his eyes scare Towada. He then reminds him that even if they did win all the way to the finals, they would end up getting crushed by Shiratorizawa and it would be pointless.
The game before Karasuno's finishes and they head onto the court. Tazawa and Oyasu from Ohgiminami are shown giving scary looks to Tanaka and Hinata. Tanaka comments that they look like local inmates, but Sugawara says that he's the one to talk. Karasuno warms up while the same guys continue to taunt Tanaka about his head, questioning if he has lice.
Tanaka then puts his hands together as if he's praying and offers his best regards to the two second-years. He spikes a powerful cross spike, which surprises them. He then does the same thing and apologizes to Kageyama for the sudden outburst.
Hinata then spikes and Towada is surprised by Karasuno's power.
Set 1[]
Takeda reminds the team about the training camp and how they lost 60 matches due to not perfecting their skills right away. He then tells the team that they've now perfected those new attacks and that they can put them to the test and snatch a victory.
The match begins with Asahi's serve. He performs a jump serve and scores an untouched ace, which shocks everyone. Karasuno cheers and Ukai says that everyone is in top form.
A montage of Tanaka, Asahi, and Tsukishima spiking is shown. Karasuno already leads 16-11. Tazawa goes to spike, attempting a feint, but Daichi sees it and is able to receive it. He thinks to himself about how he can see the spiker's movements a lot better than before. Asahi spikes, but Yokote manages to pick it up. Tsukishima knows that Ohgiminami does not use fast attacks a lot and predicts the ball will go left. He is right and he and Kageyama shut down Tazawa's attack.
Takeda tells Ukai that the team seems a lot more confident in their attacks, to which Ukai replies it's from practicing against national level schools with a wide variety of attacks and skills.
Tanaka spikes a back attack and scores. The score is 23-16. Kageyama serves and lands a service ace, getting Karasuno to set point. Towada appears frustrated that they are against another strong opponent in only their second match.
He thinks back to the Interhigh Preliminaries, when his team was losing to Shiratorizawa. He remembers how his former captain, Noboru Akimiya, was always enthusiastic, even when it was obvious that they were going to lose. He thinks about when the ball was above him, but he decided to ignore it, because if it scored, they would still lose anyway and tells himself that there is no point. Akimiya, however, runs after the ball but does not catch up to it, and Ohgiminami loses.
Despite Akimiya seeming happy when he retired, he was later crying in the club room, which angered Towada, who in present day spikes past Hinata and Asahi, but Nishinoya receives the ball. Hinata then runs to the center and he and Kageyama perform their quick, winning the set 25-16. Towada remembers his conversation with Hinata and realizes that Hinata was really being serious when he said Karasuno was going to nationals.
Set 2[]
Before the start of the 2nd set, Akimiya comes and tells his former team that they always give up when their opponent is strong, which is why they lose. He reminds them that it's their game that they're playing, and they decide what they do. He then says that being desperate and doing what's right is perfectly fine. Towada then laughs like a maniac, freaking out his teammates. He then yells that Ohgiminami will defeat Karasuno and Shiratorizawa. His teammates agree with him. However, Karasuno overhears this and Tanaka declares that Karasuno will destroy them.
Later in the set, Hinata scores and the score is 22-13. Ukai Sr. tells Takahashi that when Asahi, Sugawara, and Daichi first arrived, Karasuno had already lost its title of being a powerhouse. He also talks about how all the players had amazing skills and talent, but they lacked confidence and acted as if they were accustomed to losing.
Asahi scores a back attack. The scorekeepers are surprised by Karasuno's 10-point lead. Kageyama serves again and gets another service ace. Sugawara and Ennoshita cheer and comment that Kageyama's serves are spot on today. Karasuno is now at match point 24-13.
Towada thinks to himself about how the effects of the missed practice are starting to show. Kageyama serves again and Yokote receives, but the ball is going over Towada's head. He questions if he can get it, but doubts it. He then remembers that they are still 2nd-years and still have another year left. In the end, he sprints toward the ball and comments that skipping practice and letting their guard down is why they stay weak. He receives the ball and tells his team to send the ball over.
Yokote hits the ball into Karasuno's side and Nishinoya receives it. Hinata passes the ball to Tanaka, who spikes, but Yokote receives the ball again. Natsuse sets to Towada who spikes, but Asahi receives the ball. Hinata jumps to spike once again, and Towada remembers how he looked down on Hinata and thought he was an idiot. As it turns out, Towada was in fact, the idiot.
Hinata scores and Karasuno wins 2:0.
