"Kiyoko's Avant-Grade Art" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Yachi attempts to help Kiyoko improve her art skills.
Plot[]
Kiyoko approaches Yachi with something that she wants the first-year to see. Yachi right away assumes that Kiyoko is giving her a performance evaluation report and fears she is not adequately performing her duties as a new manager. Kiyoko quickly calms the younger girl down and explains that she had made a poster in hopes of recruiting new players for the volleyball team. Since Yachi is known to be talented in this area, Kiyoko wanted some feedback on the poster she had made.
Yachi looks at the poster and sees Kiyoko's lacking art skills firsthand. Hoping that the poster would show how serious the club can be, Kiyoko admits that she put several hours of hard work into the poster. Still not believing that the artwork could come from Kiyoko, Yachi suddenly recalls the poster that Kiyoko had used when she first recruited Yachi to be a manager and realizes the third-year was the one who made it and not Hinata or Nishinoya like Yachi originally believed. Kiyoko admits that she doesn't understand perspective too well and would like Yachi's help regarding the issue. Yachi suggests that Kiyoko could possibly use real life to get a better idea instead of just using imagination. Kiyoko happily accepts the information and hurries off to try to make a better poster.
Later during practice, Yachi is still looking at the awful drawing when Tanaka and Nishinoya see it. They right away begin mocking the poster, thinking Hinata must have drawn it, but quickly change their attitudes when Yachi says that Kiyoko was the one who drew it, now worshipping the artwork. Kiyoko soon appears in the gym with another poster and presents it to Yachi. Unfortunately, the poster is even worse than the previous one but Yachi refrains from saying anything. Tanaka sees one of the people that Kiyoko drew and is certain that it is of himself. Kiyoko admits it is simply because Tanaka is easier to draw and the second person is Narita. Asahi suggests that Kiyoko could possibly use Hinata and Kageyama for the poster but Kiyoko misinterprets and asks the two first-years to shave their hair off.
Yachi instead tells Kiyoko to draw Kageyama from the back and Hinata in orange. The third year agrees to try once more. Yachi sits next to the older girl as she begins another poster as practice continues. As the boys continue, Kiyoko carefully watches their movements and even asks Hinata to pause in midair when he is spiking. Eventually, Kiyoko admits that she is not very good at drawing people and decides to draw the volleyball larger than it needs to be in order to make up for that. She starts to overcompensate by adding more volleyballs and people until there isn't enough room left for lettering to be added.
When her fellow third-years see the poster but make a quick escape to give their thoughts, Kiyoko asks Yachi to give her an honest answer on her art. When Yachi repeatedly says how the volleyballs are really well drawn, Kiyoko finally sees that her drawing of people isn't very good.
Fortunately, Yachi comes up with a quick solution in which they can use Kiyoko's skill of drawing the volleyball properly. Kiyoko later presents another poster to Daichi, Sugawara, and Asahi of two players with their heads covered by volleyballs. Yachi silently emits a message that this was the best advice she could give Kiyoko. Nishinoya compliments how he thinks she drew Hinata and Kageyama fairly well, pleasing her that he was able to recognize the two even though Tsukishima points out that their jersey numbers are readable.
