"Kunimi the Hermit" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the ninety-eighth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on June 13, 2022 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

After a game of beach volleyball and an off-handed comment from Hinata, Kunimi decides to become a hermit.

Plot[]

After the match between the Schweiden Adlers and MSBY Black Jackals, Kageyama requested to play a game with Kindaichi and Kunimi. The two agreed to his request but Kunimi soon becomes irritated when the day is approaching that they will make good on that agreement. Knowing how Kageyama tends to play, Kunimi makes a comment about contacting Matsukawa in case he does not survive the match, but Kindaichi thinks his friend is just being dramatic.

Finally, the day has arrived that the group will be playing on the beach. Kunimi is upset at learning their game will be played outdoors since he had no prior knowledge of this and seems more fitting for Hinata and Kageyama. The mentioned players soon arrive, and their games starts. Despite his initial lack of interest, Kunimi proves to still be a talented volleyball player. When the game ends, the others comment how Kunimi should try playing beach volleyball. Kunimi replies such a thing would be the end of him and Hinata makes a joking comment that Kunimi should become a hermit.

Sometime later, members of the Aoba Johsai team are meeting when Hanamaki expresses his surprise in hearing Kunimi actually played on the beach. Kindaichi adds that Kunimi was playfully called a hermit and now seems to have a talent to read the wind. Hearing this, Hanamaki questions if this is the reason that Kunimi is now dressed as a hermit.

At a restaurant, the former teammates gather together and attempt to talk Kunimi out of living the hermit life and to focus on finishing his final year of college so that he can start working after graduating. Despite his friend's protests, Kunimi remains unwilling to leave being a hermit as it allows him to not have to worry about everyday matters. He then conjures a ball of mist in his hand that will allow them to feel full despite not eating. Matsukawa protests that this does not allow someone to ignore the worries of everyday life and instead allows them to simply escape reality, something that Kunimi says he can do.

After Hanamaki voices his hunger to Iwaizumi who states he should just eat, Kunimi is questioned about one day falling from his hermit state. Kunimi then states that when he decided to become a hermit, Kunimi the person perished, and Kunimi the Hermit was born. Despite working at a funeral home, Matsukawa claims to have never heard anything like that.

Because of his new hermit status, Kunimi is stated to now be able to read the weather with great accuracy. He is suggested to earn a living by reading the weather but it's not clear how he could do such a thing. Kunimi attempts to demonstrate how he can read the weather but Yahaba states that someone doesn't need to be a hermit to read the weather. Matsukawa suggests that Kunimi should obtain a normal job. Kunimi replies that reading the weather is a normal job and is told to contact Hinata to help him further. Kunimi turns the idea down by claiming that he's too tired which leads Kindaichi to think that Kunimi is just lazy and simply doesn't want to work.

Kunimi admits that he wants to slack off, comparing it to a walrus in an aquarium but Watari claims that he has the wrong idea of the life of a walrus. With Kunimi continuing to stick to his decision, Kindaichi is amazed at how Hinata's suggestion caused Kunimi to make such a drastic change. Realizing this may call for drastic measures, Hanamaki thinks they should go above a hermit to get Kunimi to change his mind.

Out at the beach, the former Seijoh team are shocked to find Oikawa present while dressed in robes and claiming to be a god. He claims his reason for obtaining this status was due to him having been able to master the changing winds in just one day. Thus, he claims to be the god of lightning. As he makes this claim, it's pointed out that the actual god of thunder appears behind him.

Kunimi does not back down as the god of the wind appears at his side. Oikawa makes the challenge to see which of them can be the ruler of the shoreline and the two deities start to fight. Yahaba compares the sight to a Pokémon battle while Watari suggests they leave the area before someone gets hurt.

After a while, Kindaichi notices the deities become weary. The two beings are urged to continue fighting by Oikawa and Kunimi who are casually lying on the sand and are simply watching the fight. The heavenly beings become angered at seeing them relaxing while wanting them to fight and decide to attack the two.

Later, Kunimi is recovering in the hospital when his friends pop in to check on him. Kindaichi makes the comment that Kunimi should have seen such an outcome since he claims to have been able to read the weather and wind. Kunimi is further teased by his friends when Watari claims to have brought a bag that contains the fog Kunimi conjured up to eat in place of a real meal and Matsukawa offers his funeral homes services to him.
