"Kuro the Kitten" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the fifty-second chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on July 20, 2020 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

Kuroo suddenly finds his world turned upside-down when he somehow switches bodies with a cat and must now figure out how to get back to his own body. Along the way, he learns the ups and downs of being a cat.

Plot[]

While preparing for practice, Kuroo is approached by Lev who asks if it's true that he heard Kenma had recently taken in a stray cat. Kuroo confirms the rumor and states that Kenma had taken the black cat in because he wanted to help find it a home, and even named it which Kuroo thinks will only make it harder for Kenma to part with the cat later on.

Yamamoto suddenly approaches Kuroo and oddly asks if it's true that he doesn't like to eat onions. Kai appears right after and claims to have heard that Kuroo has problems with going to the bathroom when he needs to. After him, Yaku says that he heard he's in heat and makes a lot of noise at night. Kuroo finds Kenma and questions if he had named the cat after him. Kenma answers that he has named the cat 'Kuro' since he wasn't able to think of a better name. Kuroo explains that the name is causing confusion with everyone but Kenma points out how the captain and the cat appear similar and how well the name fits. Kenma sneakily suggests that Kuroo should help him find Kuro a home so the confusion will end.

Seeing that his friend is right, Kuroo agrees to help. Kenma places the cat with Kuroo while he goes to look for a possible new owner on social media. Deciding to feed the cat, Kuroo begins to tease Kuro by making him jump to reach the food. Coach Nekomata comes and sees Kuroo taunting the cat. Kuroo tries to defend himself by saying that he's not riling up the cat the same way he would an opponent, but Nekomata warns him that it might backfire on him. As if on cue, Kuro suddenly gets angry and attacks Kuroo. Nekomata lightly teases Kuroo for getting what was coming to him and offers his hand to help the teen.

However, when Kuroo reached for the coach's hand, Nekomata moves his hand in a different direction and Kuroo notices his hand is actually a paw. As Kuroo realizes that he's somehow ended up in the cat's body, his own body is now inhabited by the cat and runs off.

Kuroo begins to panic as he wonders how he will be able to get back to his own body. His panic is cut short when he suddenly notices Alisa is present and has spotted him after having brought her brother his forgotten bag. Alisa calls to the cat and Kuroo right away takes advantage and crawls onto her lap. As he is being given attention by Alisa, Kuroo suddenly thinks that being a cat isn't so bad since they get all kinds of attention and basically get to do whatever they want.

However, just as he is thinking he is in paradise, Yaku appears and presents a litter box for the cat to use. The libero tries to get him to use the box, but Kuroo refuses to do so especially with everyone watching. When Lev mentions how Kenma has stated the cat to be grumpy and meows a lot late at night, Yaku suggests that they get the cat neutered. Hearing Lev agree and suggest everyone pitch in, Kuroo manages to escape and attempts to run off before they can get ahold of him again and now sees that cats have it rough.

Kuroo runs into Kenma who tries to coax him closer, but Kuroo keeps his distance since he doesn't want to be tricked into getting neutered. Kenma relates his own feelings of knowing what it's like to be alone, even mentioning how his namesake was like that once himself. Kenma assures him that he will do everything he can to find him a good home and that 'Kuroo' will also do what he can to help. As he looks up at his own body that the cat has control of, Kuroo apologizes for teasing him and asks to be returned to his own body with the promise of being better.

Later, Kuroo is complaining about having to have cared for Kuro until Kenma had been able to find him a new home. Even now, Kuroo is still often teased by his teammates as they continue to poke fun at him and keep calling him a cat in heat. Alisa, watching the practice on the side, is pleased to hear that Kuro has found a nice home.

Wearily, Kuroo decides to lie down for a while but doesn't right away realize that he laid his head on Alisa's lap. Surprised by his own actions, he tries to defend himself by saying it was from Kuro's instincts that he had acted upon as the others start claiming they should get their captain neutered.
