"Man-Made Wings" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Karasuno manages to keep the score close but is unable to gain an edge over Shiratorizawa. Finally, Hinata's frustration over Ushijima's remarks regarding his height and skills comes to a boil as he searches for a new way to fly high.
Plot[]
During the last timeout, Hinata suddenly recalled something Ennoshita did while Coach Ukai goes over strategy with the team. In the present, Asahi successfully keeps Ushijima's spike in play after taking an extra step back to account for a strong bounce off of the block. Karasuno entrusts the last hit to Tanaka. Despite a difficult toss, Tanaka pulls through but is shut down by Tendō. When asked how he's able to stop the spike, Tendō reveals that Tanaka's body posture and the tiny glance to the right betrayed his intention.
In the stands, the elder Ukai is delighted by Karasuno's persistence but notes that's not enough to defeat Shiratorizawa. Ushijima easily scores a service ace after overpowering Asahi's receive. Daichi manages to keep the second serve in play, allowing Kageyama and Tsukishima to score with a quick. While Hinata rotates in, Tsukishima pointedly reminds the short middle blocker of his responsibilities to score points for the team. Hinata openly accepts.
Meanwhile, Sugawara questions what Ushijima said to Hinata during the break. Yamaguchi mimics Hinata and repeats his overly-exaggerated phrase: "Sucky shrimps have no right to breathe." This earns a laugh from Sugawara, who knows Hinata is mentally strong enough to not be affected by words like these.
Tsukishima aims his serve at Reon, but the ball strays toward Goshiki and Yamagata instead. Goshiki sends a short pass, and Shirabu tosses to Reon. Fired up by Ushijima's taunt and a desire to compete with the taller players, Hinata unexpectedly moves back and starts an approach run before his block. The elder Ukai understands Hinata's intention and calls the run-up "man-made wings". With boosted height in his block, Hinata shuts down Reon's spike.
