"New Seijoh Captain" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Iwaizumi decides to challenge Oikawa for the position of team captain.
Plot[]
In the Aoba Johsai gym, Iwaizumi is attempting to get the team to get more involved in practice and attempts to get Oikawa to lecture the team but finds the setter isn't as strict as he is when it comes to training. Oikawa adds that the players don't need the extra training since they each have their own strengths that come into play when needed.
Iwaizumi quickly calls out Oikawa for not acting like a proper captain and sending a bad message to the team. Oikawa replies that Iwaizumi's harsh methods are the very reason why the ace himself couldn't be the captain. Iwaizumi immediately takes this as a challenge and declares that he will take Oikawa's position as the captain.
Oikawa later announces to the team that they will be holding an election in order for the players to vote on who they want to be the team captain. Matsukawa brings up that the team should hear what the two third-years are offering to do if they are made captain.
Oikawa begins his speech and catches the attention of many of the players when he offers to finally get the team a girl manager. He continues earning admiration when he announces that he will change practices to include working on combinations and even arrange to have matches against college teams. Iwaizumi begins his speech by stating that he will change practices to start including longer training times, practices to be held on weekends, have the team begin muscle training for an hour each day, no defeats in any matches, and aims to have everyone being able to bench press a minimum of 150 kgs. Unfortunately, his plans cause many of the team to fear that the ace is hoping to enforce militaria training and see that their belief of Oikawa being the less useful one was wrong. The team excuses themselves from the gym with the claim that they need time to think of who they want to vote for.
As Kindaichi and Kunimi talk, Kunimi reveals that he doesn't plan on voting unless his vote is needed in a tiebreaker. Their conversation is soon interrupted when Yahaba appears while pushing Oikawa around on a cart. The setter right away tries to persuade Kindaichi to vote for him if he is unsure of who to vote for and tries to sneakily offer Kindaichi some Oikawa point coins with the promise of more if he votes for the setter.
When Oikawa and Yahaba depart, the two first-years are startled when Iwaizumi pops out of the bushes with Watari at his side. Like Oikawa, Iwaizumi asks for the two to vote for him and offers his favorite food, agedashi tofu, as a means of earning their favor. He and Watari soon depart and leave the two first-years just as uncertain of who they want to vote for.
Coach Irihata gathers the team together so they can proceed with the election. With Oikawa and Iwaizumi having daruma dolls with one eye ready to be drawn in, the vote count begins. As Irihata reads each slip with Oikawa's name, he also adds that each vote slip has a reason as to why Iwaizumi was not voted for, such as stating that Iwaizumi was scary and that the team did not want to undergo his strict training.
Oikawa is announced the winner and will remain the team captain. However, it's clear to Matsukawa and Hanamaki that Oikawa was chosen not because he was the better fit to be captain but rather that he was the lesser of two evils. The setter seems to confirm this when he tells Hanamaki that he wanted to continue being the captain because it's fun to hold a position above others.
