"Online Gaming with Nekoma" (Japanese: (ひかり) 黒尾 (くろお) さん Hikari no Kuroo-san) is the fortieth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was was first released on March 16, 2020 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

Members of the Nekoma team attempt to play online games. However, they soon discover that it's not as easy as Kenma makes it look.

Plot[]

While walking home, Kenma is surprised to hear the third-years voice their interest in wanting to try playing online games since they have a little free time to spare. Since Kenma is their resident gamer, they came to him since he would be able to help them learn the ways of online gaming. Even though Kuroo asked for suggestions of easy games to start with, Kenma begins listing a variety of games, their communities, and how certain games are from different perspectives.

Eventually, they enter a fantasy role playing game. Kenma appears first, dressed as a mage, when he spots the female avatar he believes belongs to Kuroo. However, he notices Kuroo's character is missing all of their protective gear. Kuroo explains that he traded all of his armor for a large bow he saw. Kenma does not like the idea of being around a practically-naked character as Kuroo devises ways to get other players to pay for things using his characters appearance. The two are soon spotted by Kai and Yaku. Although Kai is moderately dressed, Yaku's characters is a large, extremely muscular warrior with a large battle axe that he obtained after selling his own gear.

As Kuroo and Yaku begin arguing over which range type weapon is better, Kenma urges them that they need to get started on their first quest. As they start, it quickly becomes clear that the third-years still have yet to master the controls and Kuroo even accidentally attacks Kai with his bow. Kai assures them that he will be fine since he chose to play as a healer. Kenma informs them that it would be good for their little group to have a variety of talent and skills and asks Kuroo and Yaku what they chose. To his shock, they also chose to be healers. Yaku explains that his reasoning is because a healer can support the team, much like a libero. Kuroo's reasoning is more sinister as he explains that a healer gets to decide who lives or dies.

Deciding to keep moving, Kenma reveals that the quest they are set to go on needs to be played by an eight member party and they will need to find four more people to join them. They learn that another group with four people are also looking for more people to join them in the quest. They soon meet the group of gamers and see that one of the characters is Lev. When two of the other characters introduce themselves as Nekokami and Captain General, Kuroo suspects the two are Mika and Suguru. The last character, a knight, introduces himself as Lucky Shōhei and uses puns that confirms to the others that he is indeed Fukunaga.

Surprised but not surprised at the same time, Lev is using his real name but surprises everyone when it's revealed that it's actually Alisa playing with a character she modeled after her younger brother. Now having enough players to continue, they embark on their journey even though the new additions also show trouble in still learning the controls. They soon come to their first boss challenge, and several are ready to attack until they see the weak looking imp character and become disheartened. Alisa approaches the character, thinking it's cute, and suddenly is attacked and killed. Kenma warns them not to underestimate boss characters based on their looks as they are supposed to be some of the strongest characters in the game.

As everyone gets ready to fight, their new additions reveal that they are all healers. With seemingly no way to inflict damage, Kenma gets an idea for an attack that involves raising the dead to fight in their place. When Kuroo questions the plan, Nekokami recites wisdom to them that allows Kuroo to figure out that Nekokami is actually Coach Nekomata. Kenma quickly gathers everyone together to fight. After two hours, they were finally able to beat the boss.

At their next volleyball practice, the third-years comment how online gaming seems more tiring than actual practice. At the same time, Yamamoto makes a comment wondering if Nekokami will be online that day and Nekomata smirking in the background.
