Overview[]
At the final stretch of the first set, Yamaguchi is overcome by nerves as he unleashes the jump float serve. Karasuno wins the first set but Wakutani Minami begins to turn things around later.
Plot[]
Thanks to Yamaguchi using a jump float and scoring a service ace, Karasuno has reached match point first. Though he is praised by his team, Yamaguchi is still wrought with nerves as he goes to serve again. He once more flinches when he hears the whistle blow and decides to switch to a regular serve that does not go unnoticed by Tsukishima, Ennoshita, Asahi, and Saeko.
Takeru makes the serve receive. Yūki Shiroishi approaches to spike but Hinata manages to get a one-touch. Yamaguchi is frozen in place which leaves Ennoshita to dive forward to save the ball. Asahi is given the set and is able to ricochet the ball of the block and win the set for Karasuno. As the teams switch sides, Narita spots Ukai returning and looking incredibly angry. Ukai heads right for Yamaguchi but Ennoshita intervenes and says that Yamaguchi is well-aware of what he's done.
Yamaguchi remembers back to the summer training camp how Ukai said that: "No one will criticize another for trying to do a winning serve." Saeko questions Shimada why Yamaguchi is in trouble. Shimada explains that: "A float serve can be done with or without a jump but by adding the jump it allows for the ball to be hit at a higher point with more speed that will make it harder to dig." Comparing Yamaguchi's skills to the other first-years, his serve is his greatest weapon. If he were to shy away from that, he wouldn't have anything left to fight with.
Tanaka asks Ukai of Daichi's condition. Ukai reveals that Daichi does not have a concussion but the bleeding and pain in his mouth is a bit more severe than they originally thought and is therefore being made to rest until he's better. Because of this, Ukai declares that they should not lose this game so that Daichi will come return with another game ahead of them.
In another part of the gym, Ushijima lands a spike that puts Shiratorizawa ahead in the score at 20-12 against their opponent. The news reaches Date Tech and Aoba Johsai in the sub arena and both teams ready themselves for their match.
Iwaizumi overhears that the match between Karasuno and Wakutani is still ongoing. Hanamaki is curious about how the team is doing without Daichi but Oikawa is certain that the team is starting to feel the difference in their play without him.
In the second set, Wakunan is in the lead against Karasuno with the score 18-14.
