"Seijoh's Fishing Trip" (Japanese:
Overview[]
The players of Aoba Johsai decide to take a trip into the forest for a fishing trip. Naturally, Oikawa falls into quite a situation when something precious of his is suddenly taken away and he is determined not to leave without getting it back.
Plot[]
Finding the perfect river spot in the forest, several members of the Aoba Johsai volleyball team decide to spend the day fishing. Iwaizumi mentions how the guardian of the stream may be around and they should try to catch it. At the mention of a mythical water creature, Oikawa thinks of the Loch Ness Monster and is mocked by Iwaizumi for thinking they could catch something of that size with a fishing rod.
Deciding he's not interested in the lesser-known monsters, Oikawa decides to sit out the attempt to catch the river guardian and goes to be on his phone to talk with who he claims is his newest girlfriend. However, when he gets too close to the water, the guardian appears and eats the phone. Oikawa is immediately distraught at his phone being eaten and turns to his friends for help only to see that they're more fascinated by seeing the large fish and figuring out how to catch it.
Wanting his phone back, Oikawa grabs a fishing rod and decides to lead the others in trying to catch the guardian. When Oikawa states that he will eat the fish as revenge, the others try to convince him that they should give it to the aquarium who has put a bounty on the fish.
Matsukawa shows his impressive knowledge of fishing by helping everyone decide which bait or lures they would rather use. When Iwaizumi offers to help Oikawa with his bait, the ace sees Oikawa standing in the water and posing as if offering himself. Oikawa claims the fish will come from the belief that it is attracted to bright things and says he is the brightest thing present until Matsukawa points out how the larger fish will actually prefer shade over light.
After some time, some of the boys are starting to get bored but Oikawa remains devoted to getting his phone back. Hanamaki points out how Kindaichi's line is being tugged. Kindaichi quickly reels in his lure but is disappointed to see that he didn't catch a fish and instead brings in a rubber boot, earing him slight teasing from his teammates for such a cliché. After Matsukawa is able to catch a fish, Kindaichi informs Kunimi that something has been tugging at his line for a little while. Kunimi's line has numerous fish at the end and the conservative first-year thinks it would be too much of a hassle to lure them in numerous times.
Hanamaki sees Iwaizumi's upset appearance after catching his own fish, to which the ace spiker admits that he wanted to catch something bigger in hopes of comparing strength. Nearing the end of the trip, nearly everyone has managed to catch a fish with Kindaichi being the only one who has caught nothing but rubbish. Having noticed that the guardian fish has not returned since it ate his phone, Oikawa asks Matsukawa what they should do.
Matsukawa suggests that Oikawa should tie a rope around himself and swim into the river, arguing that perhaps the guardian wasn't aiming to take the phone but was really after Oikawa. Urged by Iwaizumi to go through with Matsukawa's plan, Oikawa tries to get out of it but Iwaizumi eventually throws him into the water. Almost instantly, the guardian appears and attempts to swallow Oikawa. The others begin trying to pull the large fish in but Iwaizumi stops them from fear that it will slip loose and get away since there isn't an actual lure to keep it from escaping.
Later, a worker from the aquarium appears after having received a call that the boys had managed to catch the river guardian. He is surprised to see that the boys have managed to catch the large fish but is more surprised to see that Oikawa is still hanging out of the fish's mouth, mistaking him for a merman. With the promise of delivering their prize money the following day, the aquarium worker hauls the guardian away just as Oikawa awakens and realizes that the fish has been taken with his phone still inside it.
At the aquarium, the river guardian is starting to become known for the strange ringtones that emit from its stomach. Oikawa continues to think of ways to get his phone back as Iwaizumi offers to let Oikawa use the prize money to get a new one.
