"Shiratorizawa's Hay Fever" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Shiratorizawa is suffering a bad case of hay fever. Tired of the pollen, the Shiratorizawa team attempt to take matters into their own hands.
Plot[]
As the team is getting ready to head out to view the cherry blossoms, Tendō asks Taichi if he will be joining them. Taichi has to turn down the offer because his hay fever is acting up and insists the others go ahead without him.
Feeling bad that Taichi cannot join them, Tendō brings him several plants so that he does not miss out on the experience, but the plants only make Taichi's hay fever worse and accuse the Guess Monster of enjoying seeing people suffer. Tendō describes it as a form of exposure therapy but finds the tables turned on him when Shirabu brings in a ragweed plant that causes Tendō's hay fever to act up.
With the two blockers now unable to go out with the others, Goshiki asks how hay fever affects certain people. Shirabu explains that it can be passed down through genetics or can spring in when a change of lifestyle is made. Hearing Shirabu's explanation, Taichi and Tendō beg the future doctor to come up with a cure but Shirabu comments how something like this is asking too much of him. Semi arrives and appears unsympathetic to the middle blocker's current situation and urges them to join them outside.
When Ushijima arrives, Tendō asks the ace if he can chop down all of the trees in the area, listing the type of trees he should focus on and adding that they can sell the wood for a profit. Shirabu explains to Ushijima that Tendō and Taichi are just being sensitive because of their hay fever and suggests that the two can take some medicine to help alleviate their symptoms since there is no actual cure.
At the mention of hay fever, Ushijima reveals that his eyes and nose have been bothering him lately. Shirabu instantly reacts to the news and declares that hay fever will be the first thing he will cure when he becomes a doctor, annoying Tendō and Taichi with his sudden willingness to help the moment Ushijima is in discomfort. Upon asking if the ace spiker has been having trouble breathing, Ushijima admits that it has been a little more difficult and is instantly urged by Shirabu to wear several layers of protective masks. Shirabu hands everyone else a protective mask but his motive for this is quickly revealed when he obtains a chainsaw and declares that they will be heading out to cut down all of the trees. When Goshiki asks what type of trees cause hay fever, Reon lists a variety of trees that just fuels Shirabu to cut every tree in the area. His determination is stopped short when Ushijima warns how bad it is to destroy plants simply for human convenience and states that they should simply talk to nature, confusing many of his teammates, and asks the flower fairy they recently encountered for help.
In the middle of the woods, the team encounter a cedar fairy with an appearance similar to Ogano who explains that the trees need to spread their seeds in order to keep reproducing. Eikichi, a cypress fairy, comments how the humans wouldn't be able to stop their own species from reproducing if they were asked to. Gōra, a ragweed fairy, supports his fellow trees and receives ridicule from Taichi. The grass fairy, Sakusa, suggests that the humans wear masks, take medicine, don't venture out during pollen season, or should move to another location. Intrigued by the idea of living somewhere with less pollen, Taichi announces that he will attend college in Tokyo and Tendō says he will go to Europe.
Shirabu finally decides that it was too much of them to ask the trees to stop producing their pollen simply because a few of them didn't want to suffer through the hay fever. Just as some of them are preparing to leave, Goshiki points out how he smells something burning and notices that Ogano's leaves are on fire.
When the other fairies run in fear of catching on fire, the Shiratorizawa team attempt to help but many of them are unable to because of the smoke affecting their sight and breathing. However, Ushijima, Tendō, and Taichi are able to get close enough to try to put out the fire because their runny eyes and noses are preventing the smoke from bothering them. Touched by the fact that the teens would help them, the fairies later present them with a special gift as gratitude.
All those suffering from hay fever are overjoyed by the trees having agreed to move to another location. Feeling back to normal, they all decide to go view the cherry blossoms only to see that the cherry blossom trees have left as well. Several years later, Tendō is in Rome when he calls Taichi to ask how his hay fever is now that he is in Tokyo. Taichi angrily explains how the streets made of asphalt do not absorb the pollen and the fumes from car exhaust mixing with the pollen makes it even harder to breathe.
