"Tōru Oikawa Is No Prodigy" (Japanese: (おい) (かわ) (とうる) (てん) (さい) ではない Oikawa Tōru wa Tensai de wa Nai) is the fifty-third chapter of the Haikyū!! series, written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. It was published in the 16th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump's 2013 series.

Overview[]

It was back in junior high when Kageyama formed his goal to surpass the best setter in Miyagi, namely Oikawa, but the latter admits to himself that it's Kageyama who's better at setting. A strong rivalry forms between the two setters as they both resolve to defeat each other. As the match carries on, Kageyama starts to lose his composure.

Plot[]

Kageyama has aimed to surpass Oikawa since middle school. Now that they are playing against each other, Kageyama is unsettled by Oikawa's control over the game as well as the wide lead Aoba Johsai has over Karasuno. Even with the God-like quick, Karasuno is unable to regain momentum. Oikawa has already figured out the oddball combo's signal and instructed his teammates on how to counter it. At the same time, he is taking full advantage of his teammates' potential to break through Karasuno's defense.

As the match continues, Kageyama grows increasingly impatient to change the tide of the game. Oikawa recognizes this behavior—the tendency to do everything himself—as Kageyama's ultimate flaw as a setter despite the latter's overwhelming talent. Karasuno's offense begins accelerating after Kageyama utilizes pure speed to avoid blockers. In contrast, Aoba Johsai maintains a steady pace with Oikawa adapting to his spikers' unique traits and providing the best toss for each. Eventually, the two setters end up in a joust at the net.

Oikawa patiently waits for Kageyama to push first before skillfully sending the ball over. Kageyama begins losing his composure, causing him to send a faulty toss that costs Karasuno another point. With Aoba Johsai leading 20-11, Karasuno decides to sub out Kageyama for Sugawara. Immediately, Hinata shouts at Kageyama to not to lose to anybody else before him. As Sugawara takes his place, Coach Ukai tells Kageyama to carefully watch and learn from the third-year.
