"Tanaka and The Monkeys" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the sixty-seventh chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on March 15, 2021 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

While out at the zoo, Tanaka is mistaken for one of the monkeys and ends up in the monkey enclosure overnight where he learns of the tyranny that is present and leads a rebellion.

Plot[]

While at the zoo with his sister, Tanaka teases the monkeys by holding bananas before them and keeping them out of reach. Saeko warns her brother not to make fun of the monkeys or else he might be on the receiving end of their revenge. At that moment, the monkeys swarm Tanaka and pull him into their enclosure. Saeko calls for the zookeepers for help and is later able to leave with a monkey that everyone mistakes for Tanaka.

In the monkey exhibit, Tanaka calls out for help but they caretakers simply think they've gained the ability to understand the animals and leave for the night. Tanaka continues to try to call for help but soon hears someone telling him to introduce himself. He looks over and sees the boss monkey talking to him. Tanaka right away takes offense and says that he cannot be spoken to this way since he is a human and is above them. This earns him another attack from more monkeys who claim that he is lower than them since he fell into their area.

When the monkeys receive their food for the night, the boss monkey collects everything and distributes everything to the others with Tanaka only receiving an empty coconut shell. After being attacked again when trying to get more food, Tanaka is approached by one of the female monkeys who offers him some of her food. After applying his own filter, he sees the monkey as Kanoka. When he points out how she doesn't have much herself, she explains that a new boss recently arrived and changed how food was handed out, giving more to those who earn his favor and less to those who do not obey his rules.

Hearing how the monkeys struggle and feeling certain that he will be saved in the morning, Tanaka makes a silent vow to throw more food the next time he visits. Unfortunately, he looks up at the enclosure opening and sees the caretakers putting up an energy shield to prevent anyone else from falling like he had. When Monkey-Kanoka tries offer him more of her small amount of food, Tanaka assures her that she won't have to worry about having so little to eat as he will dethrone the boss monkey. He is warned of the numerous henchmen that the boss has but more of the females decide to join as they are also tired of the way the boss monkey is running things. With more help and admiration on his side, Tanaka begins to formulate a plan.

When the next shipment of food arrives, Tanaka announces that he will be ending the tyranny that is present. When two of the main henchmen try to attack, Tanaka quickly defeats them by using his jump serve to hit them with coconuts the females gave him. Even though the henchmen try to fight back, they find they cannot perform the same skills as Tanaka.

Kiyoko and Saeko are running through the zoo as Kiyoko questions how Saeko did not notice that she had a monkey and not her brother. Saeko replies that they looked similar so it was an easy mistake. They reach the monkey enclosure but are surprised to see that Tanaka has been made the new leader. Seeing how happy he looks, Saeko suggests that they leave him be.
