"Tendō's Double" (Japanese:
Overview[]
Tendō is sick and has to stay home. In order to not miss out on his school attendance, he sends someone to take his place for the day.
Plot[]
Even though the dorms are not far from the school, Goshiki still finds displeasure in walking to school in the morning when it's cold. His thoughts are soon interrupted when he feels someone jab his butt. He whirls around, angrily expecting to see Tendō, and finds the kappa he and the others had previously encountered. Dressed in Tendō's school uniform, the kappa holds up a card that states he is Tendō but Goshiki is not fooled at all.
Goshiki calls Tendō who reveals that he has caught a cold and had to stay home. Tendō explains that he couldn't afford to miss school since it would affect his chance to graduate so he had decided to send the kappa in his place. Goshiki questions when Tendō had met the kappa and befriended it. Tendō assures the first-year that the kappa will be able to perfectly blend in, but Goshiki does not think it will work, stating that the kappa is continually poking at his butt and possibly is trying to get the supposed butt ball that it thinks humans have. Unfortunately, Tendō has ended the phone call by this point. Goshiki continues to think that the kappa will not be able to pull off acting as Tendō, taking in that the kappa has green skin, a plate on his head, and wearing a large shell on his back.
Semi and Reon arrive and greet Goshiki. The two see the kappa but right away mistake it for Tendō even as Goshiki tries to make them see that it isn't the Guess Monster by pointing out it's odd appearance but the two play it off as Tendō simply trying a new look. Goshiki tries to make the two see that the kappa keeps poking his butt and how he's eating cucumbers but again, the older teens think that it's just the close bond that Goshiki and Tendō have and try to proceed to class.
Just then, Yamagata rushes toward the group looking for Tendō. He asks for help concerning a difficult math equation since his first period class has a test and he is concerned about making mistakes. Goshiki feels certain that the kappa will not be able to understand such a problem but soon sees the kappa using cucumbers to help Yamagata understand the problem and eventually get the correct answer. Goshiki questions how his upperclassman still do not see the truth before them when Semi tries to make him understand that Tendō is just being his usual odd self and misses seeing the kappa stretching its arm toward a tree.
Ushijima arrives and asks why everyone hasn't made it to class yet. Goshiki notices how the ace is wearing a mask and learns that Ushijima is being cautious since the weather has gotten colder and his throat is hurting. The kappa suddenly approaches Ushijima and places its shell and plate on the ace in the attempt to keep him warm. Even though he's touched by the gesture, Ushijima returns the items since they are too cold and heavy.
The group suddenly hears panicked shouting and see that Shirabu has fallen into the river that is somehow on campus. As he is being swept away by the current, Shirabu admits he fell in because he had seen Ushijima wearing a mask and had leaned over the bank to get a better look. Ushijima attempts to jump into the river to save the setter but Semi prevents him since the ace is already feeling a little ill and Reon adds that he might get caught in the current as well.
Shedding the school uniform, the kappa dives into the river and rescues Shirabu. Not only does the kappa save the second-year, he also saves a small girl, and even one of the riding club's horses. Semi hopes that Goshiki will stop trying to convince everyone that Tendō is a kappa since only Tendō would help others without worry for his own wellbeing. Hearing what Semi just said, Reon suddenly realizes that Tendō wouldn't put himself in danger to save someone else and Yamagata finally clearly sees the kappa's appearance.
In the end, Tendō managed to keep his attendance record intact but started becoming confused for the kappa and was captured.
