"Tendō's Hetappi Manga Way" (Japanese: 天童のヘタッピ漫画道 Tendō no Hetappi Manga Michi) is the twelfth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on August 12, 2019 on Shōnen Jump+.
Overview[]
Tendō decides to enter a manga contest and enlists Ushijima to help with the artwork. Giving their teammates the first draft to read, the originality of the story becomes questionable.
Plot[]
One day at Shiratorizawa Academy, Shirabu and Kawanishi question Tendō of what he is doing and learn that he is attempting to write his own manga. Even though he admits that this is his first time attempting a manga, he wants to enter a contest where the grand prize is one million yen. When he feels that Shirabu insulted his art skills, Tendō declares that he has found someone who will draw the scenes for him and reveals this artist to be Ushijima himself, but only on the condition that this project does not get in the way of volleyball practice.
Kawanishi asks Ushijima of his artistic skills and the ace answers that he drew frequently when he was a child. Tendō adds that because Ushijima is left-handed that he must surely be more artistically creative. Shirabu decides to question Tendō about what his manga will be about in order to get an idea of what Ushijima may be faced with. Tendō answers that his manga will be about a ninja who falls into a parallel universe only to awaken as a soul reaper who will enroll in an academy for heroes, among other things. Shirabu and Kawanishi quickly call Tendō out on copying ideas from other series but the middle blocker feels certain the story will seem original.
Since the two second-years do not read as much manga as Tendō does, he enlists their help for new, fresh ideas. Ushijima suddenly states that the main character should be a volleyball player who eventually marries into an established family and is blessed with a gifted son. Tendō quickly points out that he already knows this story since it's the story of Ushijima's father.
Goshiki suddenly appears, wanting to offer his own ideas since Ushijima is attempting to give his own. When Tendō tries to dismiss Goshiki for being too 'normal', Goshiki tries to give his own idea of a volleyball player who is on the same level as Ushijima but as a first-year with better skills and a cooler hair style with the goal of becoming the ultimate ace but faced with the current ultimate ace as his only obstacle. Shirabu quickly shuts Goshiki down by pointing out how the younger ace would still be leagues behind the current one.
Eventually, Tendō and Ushijima have finished their manga and present it to Taichi, Shirabu, and Goshiki with the honor of being the first ones to read it. Shirabu decides they should give it a chance for Ushijima's sake but states he will destroy it if it will ruin the ace's reputation. At seeing the first panel, the three are stunned to see Ushijima's incredible talent. With Tendō's story now being supported with Ushijima's beautiful artwork, they begin to understand the story better and even notice how Tendō has added foreshadowing in volleyball terms. Just as they were starting to think Tendō's story was normal, they come across a panel of a woman in the shower and the story starting to diminish after this with the pace of the story being increasingly fast and a character from another series making an appearance.
As Shirabu believes the manga is not original or interesting, Reon, Semi, and Yamagata claim otherwise and wish to finish the story. When they finish it, they celebrate Tendō's genius even as Shirabu points out the work was good because many points were copied from other series. He then notices Goshiki attempting to write his own manga and listen as the first-year claims he will have a manga just as good as Tendō's by the time he is a third-year.
Later, Goshiki and Shirabu find Tendō in a distraught manner and learn that his manga was rejected.

- The lyrics from the Pegasus is possibly a reference toward the anime series Knights of the Zodiac/Saint Seiya, which has the opening song 'Pegasus Fantasy'.
