"Tendō and a Kappa" (Japanese:
Overview[]
A kappa has been spotted around Shiratorizawa Academy. However, many confuse the creature for the famed Guess Monster who soon seeks to prove everyone wrong by capturing the kappa. The Shiratorizawa team do not allow Tendō to do this alone but soon find trouble of their own in looking for the kappa.
Plot[]
On a seemingly boring day at Shiratorizawa Academy, Semi comments how hard it is to entertain one's self when they live in the dorms of the school and there are no club activities to attend. Tendō shares in Semi's boredom and vocally wishes that something interesting would happen.
As if to grant his wish, Goshiki comes running into the cafeteria shouting about a kappa that has been spotted near campus and shows them a poster of what the kappa looks like. As Tendō questions if there is a reward for its capture, Semi thinks that the photo is just a picture of the middle blocker. Tendō right away tries to point out that the photo is not of himself and that he would never get into a river during such cold weather. Unfortunately, his companions continue to believe the photo of the kappa is indeed Tendō. Upset at the situation, Tendō declares that he will go out and find the kappa to prove everyone wrong. Goshiki is understanding of why Tendō is upset at being called a kappa despite the fact the creature is known to walk around naked. Semi states that Tendō does indeed look like a naked kappa when he has just showered.
Still, Goshiki states that they should get Tendō to come back to the dorms. Semi agrees, stating that it might be possible that someone could mistake Tendō for the kappa and try to capture him. The teens make their way to the river and begin asking a man passing by if he has seen Tendō. The man, Ikkei Ukai, answers that the kappa has been seen in the area but is hard to come across which may be because it uses its sharp instincts to stay out of sight. The description of such abilities further convinces the third-years that the kappa and Tendō are one in the same since the kappa's abilities sound exactly like Tendō's blocking style.
As the group continues their search, Goshiki mentions that he hopes the kappa does not try to take their butt balls. When Ushijima mistakes his phrasing for a volleyball, Goshiki explains that kappa's are said to be after a supposed mythical ball inside people's butts. As they enter the woods, Semi spots someone close by and decides to ask if they have seen Tendō. The person turns out to be a monk who they notice holds a close resemblance to Tanaka. When the monk learns they are possibly looking for the kappa, he confesses that he is in search of it as well as he seeks to destroy the kappa since it is one of great danger.
As they hide in some bushes next to a river, the monk points out a figure in the nearby body of water. Goshiki is surprised to see that it's the kappa that does indeed look incredibly similar to Tendō other than being naked and wearing a large shell on its back. Amazed at how much the kappa does look like Tendō, Goshiki tries to make his upperclassmen see that it is not Tendō by pointing out the creature before them has green skin. However, Ushijima points out that Tendō looks green when he is sick, and the statement does little to help Goshiki.
The monk points out that the kappa is now preparing itself for a possible fight and attempts to distract it with a cucumber that is said to be its favorite thing although Semi states that Shonen Jump would be better to use. Both items are tossed into an open area and the kappa right away goes to the Shonen Jump magazine. With the kappa distracted, the monk attempts to use sumo wrestling to defeat it but finds himself suddenly launched high into the air instead.
Having witnessed the feat, Semi and Reon finally see that the kappa before them is not Tendō. Ushijima is the only one who has yet to change his mind and claims that Tendō would be capable of such a feat since he has been at Shiratorizawa for three years and had undergone all of the rigorous training during that time. When Reon and Semi loudly apologize to Tendō for their earlier comments, the kappa notices them and begins to advance. Just as it's about to reach them, Ushijima suddenly launches the kappa into the air and out of sight.
Ushijima right away becomes upset at what he has done, believing that he had instinctively threw Tendō even though Goshiki tries to make him understand that it wasn't Tendō he threw. From behind them, Tendō suddenly exits the woods. Ushijima is confused at his sudden appearance, thinking that he had sent 'Tendō' flying in the opposite direction. Semi and Reon revert back to thinking the kappa was Tendō and apologize for making him stress so much that his skin had turned green. Although Tendō does not understand what they are talking about, he accepts their apologies and things go back to normal.
Sometime later, Semi enters the gym during practice with the news that a crow tengu has been sighted nearby. Ushijima right away thinks it must be Hinata, leading Goshiki to see how Ushijima categorizes certain things.
