"The Return" (Japanese: (ふっ) (かつ) Fukkatsu) is the thirty-ninth chapter of the Haikyū!! series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. It was published in the 52nd issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump's 2012 series.

Overview[]

The match between Karasuno and Tokonami officially begins. Aoba Johsai comes to watch and is impressed by the vast improvements Karasuno has made since the practice match a few months ago. Hinata and Kageyama perform their quick strike and shows to everyone in the stadium that Karasuno can no longer be called the "Flightless Crows".

Plot[]

Aoba Johsai watches Karasuno warm up and comments on the new players and coach. Irihata wonders how much Karasuno has changed since the practice match. The players soon line up and greet one another. Before the match begins, Hinata hears Date Tech cheering on its players from the bleachers and gets scared by the intensity of it. Ukai tells the players that it's only normal for them to feel nervous at the beginning of the first match. It's only a matter of who breaks out of it faster. Takeda adds that Karasuno is strong so the players must show everyone in the stadium that the "Flightless Crows" are in the air once again.

The players take their place on the court and Iwaizumi laughs at how confused Tokonami is at Hinata being a middle blocker. Kindaichi comments that those who underestimate him are going to regret it; he vows to overpower Hinata the next time they play against each other.

Karasuno easily scores the first point and Daichi tries to compliment Tanaka for it, but the latter and Nishinoya drown out Daichi's voice with their shouts. Daichi ends up yelling at them, causing the referee to give him a warning. The match continues with Karasuno overwhelming Tokonami. Iwaizumi and Kindaichi are shocked at the improvements Karasuno has with the new players, especially Asahi. Although, the ace gets a little discouraged when he hears the spectators commenting on the rumors of him being held back.

Hinata begins to get fidgety since he hasn't hit anything yet. Kageyama gets the message and gives the next ball to Hinata who, almost as if he's flying, jumps up and slams it down before the opponents can even react. The entire stadium goes quiet, with even Date Tech and Oikawa watching in amazement. With this quick, the former powerhouse Karasuno has shown everyone that it has been revived.
