"The Seijoh Castaway Log" (Japanese: 青城少年漂流記 Seijō Shōnen Hyōryūki) is the sixteenth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on September 16, 2019 on Shōnen Jump+.
Overview[]
Stranded on a deserted island, the players of Aoba Johsai find themselves doing all they can to survive. As the days go by, several players begin to lose themselves to the situation as they wait for help to arrive.
Plot[]
Kindaichi looks about and wonders what happened that caused him and his teammates to be washed ashore on a deserted island. With Yahaba locating Kunimi, all of the players are accounted for. The youngest member of the team startles everyone by suddenly awakening, his breathing having been so shallow that Kindaichi thought it wasn't there, but Yahaba thinks Kunimi did this as a means of self-preservation.
With Kindaichi sure that the school will be sending someone to help them, Kunimi attempts to go back to sleep, but Kindaichi forces him back up. Reuniting with the others, Iwaizumi is shown to have taken lead by having everyone split up to help build a shelter and gather food. Oikawa is spotted tied to a large wooden mast that is explained to have resulted from having angered Iwaizumi and is now being offered as a token to the gods to prevent storms. Kyōtani is added to have somehow gathered a pack of stray dogs and led them into the woods to hunt. Kindaichi and Kunimi decide to help Matsukawa in gathering supplies and find the third-year's hair greatly affected by the island humidity.
Having been on the island for a few hours already, Kindaichi and Kunimi decide to try fishing. Despite Kunimi's protests, Kindaichi tries to turn it into a contest to see who can catch the most fish. Although having tried to stay patient, Kindaichi quickly becomes frustrated at not catching anything. To his shock, Kunimi has managed to catch several fish that he explains to have done using his suspended animation process. Returning to the others, they now have fire, food, and shelter and celebrate making it through the first day.
Over the course of fifty-eight days, it's becoming clear that some of the boys are falling victim to the isolation, Hanamaki having long ago started to imagine random items as cream puffs, and Kyōtani succumbing to the wild. With the boys now having to hunt every day to have food, rations are growing short and not many are left who are able to move about. With Oikawa continuing to rant while still tied to the mast, Kindaichi decides to try fishing again.
As he reaches the shore, he spots a boat in the distance and tries feverishly to get its attention, but his fatigue and hunger prevent him from doing much. Kunimi appears and sees the boat as well. Kindaichi sees that his friend still has energy to spare thanks to his conservative nature and tries to convince him to flag the boat down.
On the boat, Mizoguchi and Irihata continue to search for the missing Seijoh players. They soon spot smoke in the direction of the island and soon see that the mast Oikawa has been tied to is now on fire. Eventually, everyone returns to Seijoh with Kindaichi commenting Kunimi on being dependable during a crisis. Kunimi comments how everyone was able to make it back in one piece but Oikawa, heavily bandaged from the fire, argues his statement.
