"Ushijima VS Psychic Phenomenon" (Japanese: 牛島VS心霊現象 Ushijima VS Shinrei Genshō) is the third chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

With rumors of Shiratorizawa's gym being haunted, members of the boys' volleyball team decide to stay overnight to see if the rumors are true. Throughout the night, they witness several strange things take place, but some believe Ushijima's behavior is particularly odd.

Plot[]

Noticing how late it is, Tendō suggests to Ushijima that it's time to end practice and head back to their dorms. As Ushijima agrees to Tendō's request, the middle blocker suddenly dodges a stray volleyball. He quickly scolds Goshiki for letting the ball get away from him and giving his upperclassman a fright. However, Tendō notices that Ushijima was not startled in the least.

Reon and Shirabu question Ushijima if there is anything he is afraid of but the ace cannot think of anything. As Goshiki attempts to portray an attitude of fearlessness, he suddenly notices a will o' the wisp behind Ushijima. Pointing this out to the others, his teammates begin to grow fearful of the sudden appearance of a spirit until Ushijima crushes it between his hands, believing it was a firefly. Shirabu asks why Ushijima felt he should crush the firefly while thinking it might be related to his need to crush Tsukishima. Ushijima answers that he was simply trying to catch it, as he had seen something similar when watching an anime movie a while back but notices the firefly escaped his grasp.

Reon begins to feel at ease hearing Ushijima claim the spirit was just a firefly. As Yamagata tries to voice his own agreement, Goshiki tries to state that there is a spirit present and claims that the gym is haunted. Seeing that no one will be at ease unless proven otherwise, Ushijima offers to keep an eye on the gym throughout the night. Hearing this, the others begin to declare that they will stay as well. Hearing how excited his seniors are at staying overnight, Goshiki quickly adds that he will be staying as well. The boys place their hands together in a huddle and Goshiki quickly notices an eighth hand among theirs. Semi noticed the transparent arm as well but Ushijima waves it off as a possible extra member who simply snuck in when they were not looking.

Tendō attempts to calm everyone by saying that they're all making a fuss out of nothing. He especially points out Goshiki and tries to scare the first-year by claiming his doppelganger is standing behind him. Goshiki becomes frightened until Reon points out that it's only Shirabu standing behind him. While Goshiki attempts to show his anger to Tendō for scaring him, a sudden noise catches their attention. Ushijima points out the noise is coming from the entrance doors opening and shutting but adds that no one is there. Reon tries to play it off as the wind moving the doors but Tendō points out that the doors are too heavy for the wind to move in such a manner. The middle blocker pleads for Ushijima to use his incredible strength to stop the doors and receives instant satisfaction when Ushijima is able to stop the doors but hears the ace claim that the door does not fit the frame properly. However, he is able to use his brute force to quickly fix this issue.

With this problem solved, Ushijima states that they are just wasting time by standing around and suggests a three-on-three game. While the others voice their agreement, Goshiki suddenly confesses to Reon that he is in need of going to the restroom but fears going alone. Ushijima volunteers to escort the frightened first-year. Although Goshiki thinks Ushijima is taking pity on him, he accepts the older wing spiker's help. Not long after the two leave, the remaining players suddenly hear Goshiki shouting of a kappa being in the bathroom. Ushijima soon returns, but instead of having Goshiki with him, there is a young girl at his side. Ushijima seems convinced the small girl is actually Goshiki, even though Tendō and Shirabu try to convince him otherwise while trying to figure out how to save Goshiki.

Semi and Reon suddenly feel a chill in the air before Yamagata points out a large, dark shadow several feet away. They watch as Ushijima spikes a volleyball through the shadow and continues to prove his fearlessness, while also making Tendō believe that even spirits are not brave enough to stand up to Ushijima. With the cold atmosphere receding, Shirabu believes that everything is returning to normal until Washijō suddenly appears. As he questions them of why they are in the gym so late, Ushijima repeats his previous actions of spiking a ball, hitting Washijō directly on his head.

With his injury treated, Washijō promptly scolds the boys about staying in the gym so late while believing the supposed rumors of hauntings. Washijō especially scolds Ushijima for believing such things. After Ushijima apologizes, Washijō chalks their behavior up to the antics of youth. He lets them off with a warning for now but promises they will not be so lucky next time.

Relieved they are not in trouble, Tendō points out Ushijima was probably the only one of them not afraid. However, Ushijima admits that, even though he believes not much happened during the night, he states that hitting their coach was probably the scariest thing to happen, shocking many who are still surprised that Ushijima was not frightened in the least by the paranormal activity they witnessed.

In the boy's bathroom, Goshiki is still in one of the stalls. Believing he has been forgotten, he decides to ease his fears by reading a new manga.
