"Volleyball and Me" (Japanese: バレーと私 Barē to Watashi) is the sixth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on Shōnen Jump+.
Overview[]
Suguru attempts to put all of his focus on his girlfriend, Mika, instead of volleyball activities.
Plot[]
Mika questions Suguru if he had spent their last day off playing volleyball with an adult team. Suguru confirms he did, claiming that playing against an adult team was exciting. He goes on to say that the Nohebi team will have a practice match today and it will be the first one since the third-years retired. He tries to calm himself at noticing how excited he is getting talking about volleyball until Mika states that she would like for them to spend a day away from the sport.
Suguru later turns to his volleyball team for advice of what he should do but unfortunately is unable to receive any help from the younger players since they believe he is there to brag about having a girlfriend. Going to the other retired third-years, Suguru is convinced that Mika may be attempting the 'volleyball or me' tactic but recalls how she had asked him to teach her about it. Sakishima points out how the girlfriend should be the bigger priority over volleyball, his frustration of not having a girlfriend of his own becoming apparent to everyone. The team eventually decides that since Suguru is the only one among them with a girlfriend that he should figure out what to do himself. The only person willing to help him says that he should take Mika's feelings into consideration since she has waited for him throughout the time he has been devoted to club activities and now has the free time to focus on her.
Taking this advice to heart, Suguru offers to take Mika out to watch a movie. Even with how happy she is about spending the day together, Mika questions if Suguru is fine being away from volleyball practice. He assures her that he is completely fine with spending the day with her and that she is more important to him.
After some shopping, Suguru notices a flyer with information about the upcoming Spring Tournament. When Mika spots him looking at the flyer, she announces that she has something in mind that she wants to do. The two later are in Nohebi's gym where Mika insists they play volleyball together although her lack of skill is clear. Suguru asks why she is wanting to play when he believed she didn't actually like the sport. Mika answers that she did grow bored of it from simply watching weeks of matches but now wants to see what it is that has Suguru so engrossed in playing.
Overjoyed at having such a kind girlfriend, Suguru begins to show her the basics of an underhand serve when the Nohebi team arrive. They are soon dragged into a practice game as Suguru warns the players not to target Mika. As he makes the first receive, Suguru asks Mika to set the ball to him. Although nervous, she does so and Suguru is able to score.
At the Spring Tournament, Kenma spots Suguru and Mika in the crowd and points them out to Kuroo. While Kuroo and Yamamoto become annoyed that Suguru is present with Mika, Kenma states that Kuroo is the bigger winner where it concerns volleyball.
