"Yachi's Presents" (Japanese: 谷地 賵 ) is the thirtieth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on December 23, 2019 on Shōnen Jump+.
Overview[]
With Christmas quickly approaching, Madoka notices her daughter making gifts for the volleyball team but questions the reason of the gift being made.
Plot[]
Realizing that her daughter has been staying out late because of her duties with the volleyball club, Madoka questions if she needs to buy Yachi dinner for the next night. Yachi insists that she can make her own meal but this does little to convince her mother's suspicions that her daughter might be getting pushed around.
Later, she goes to Yachi's room. Knowing that the young girl has been staying up late recently, Madoka decides to see if she can figure out the sudden changes. Peeking into Yachi's room, Madoka is left speechless at the sight of her daughter carving a large, winged statue.
At school, Kiyoko asks Yachi if she has her Christmas presents settled. Yachi assures Kiyoko that she will have her gifts ready on time but is advised by her upperclassman not to push herself too hard. Yachi is determined to have her gifts ready since she knows the volleyball team is working hard and wants to show her gratitude. As their conversation is overheard by two boys who are envious of whomever is receiving Yachi's gifts, they are surprised to find that Madoka's co-worker was hiding in the bushes behind them and he too heard the conversation between the girls. He reports the information back to Madoka who is relieved to finally know what her daughter is up to although neither one of them know exactly what kind of gift Yachi is making.
Despite this, Madoka's co-worker figures that Yachi has been staying up late because she's putting all her effort into the gift. Knowing this, Madoka figures that the gift is meant for someone important but doesn't know who. As her co-worker thinks that it's for one of the boys on the team, Madoka agrees but turns down the idea that the gift is for Kageyama, Tsukishima, or Asahi since Yachi would be too terrified of someone much taller than her. At the next suggestion that the gift might be for Nishinoya or Hinata, Madoka states that Yachi would get too nervous around someone older than her, leaving Hinata as the only possibility.
Remembering that Hinata was the one on the poster Yachi had made for club donations, Madoka becomes emotional at how much Yachi has grown. Supportive of her daughter's decision to make a gift for a boy, she peers into her room that night and is surprised to see a second statue has been made. When she informs her co-worker of the appearance of the second statue, he now wonders if she will be making one for each member of the club. Fearful her daughter is being bullied, Madoka's co-worker corrects her by saying that he heard Yachi say the gifts were a sign of gratitude. Regardless, Madoka refuses to allow Yachi to do such work all by herself.
That night, she enters Yachi's room and finds that several more statues have been completed. Questioning her daughter of why she is making so many of these statues, Yachi explains that she has never been so invested in anything before joining the volleyball club and wanted to make gifts for all of her hardworking teammates.
Hearing how dedicated Yachi is, Madoka announces that she will not allow her to do all of this work by herself and asks to help. Yachi happily accepts her mother's assistance and shows her a sketch of what the statue is supposed to look like although Madoka isn't sure it's enough detail for her to follow.
At school, Kiyoko announces to the team that she and Yachi have gifts for the boys. As Kiyoko presents wrapped sweets, Yachi presents her statues. While the boys voice their joy of receiving such gifts, they internally question what type of gift it is that Yachi made. Happy to hear they like their presents, Yachi collapses from exhaustion. At home, her mother shares her weariness while still trying to figure out what the statues symbolize.
