"Yachi's Valentine" (Japanese: ({{{2}}}) ) is the thirty-fifth chapter of the Haikyū-bu!! series, written and illustrated by Kyōhei Miyajima and was first released on February 3, 2020 on Shōnen Jump+.

Overview[]

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching and thinking her daughter is making a treat for the person she likes, Madoka is determined to get Yachi everything she needs to make the perfect Valentine treat.

Plot[]

Having been peering into her daughter's room, Madoka learns that Yachi was researching cocoa beans which will certainly be used for a treat as Valentine's Day is soon approaching. Thinking that Yachi will be making a treat for the person she likes, Madoka approaches her co-worker the next day and asks him to go to Ghana to get some high-quality cocoa beans. Shocked at hearing Madoka basically give her co-worker an ultimatum, he agrees to fly to Ghana the next day.

At dinner, Madoka tells Yachi that she 'happened' to obtain a few cocoa beans that she will be giving her daughter to use for Valentine's Day for the person she likes. Yachi instantly gets flustered at her mother thinking she likes someone and insists the treats will be for her friends. Remembering how she's heard that lots of girl's give gifts to their close friends now, Madoka figures that a single cocoa bean will not be enough for Yachi. She right away calls her co-worker and catches him right as he managed to get a single cocoa bean and is planning on heading back to Japan. She quickly stops him and says that she will need him to bring back three dozen cocoa beans. When he explains how difficult it was to get the first bean, he says that it would be too much trouble to get thirty-six of them. Hearing this, Madoka decides that he should simply bring back an entire tree and ends the call. As Yachi excuses herself, Madoka is convinced that Yachi has someone special in mind since she is putting in extra effort into a treat and assumes it may be for someone on the volleyball team.

The next day, Madoka meets with her co-worker who has managed to bring back an entire cocoa tree like she had requested. Although grateful for his hard work, she informs him of the one special treat that Yachi's putting in extra effort for. Her companion thinks that Yachi is using the special treat to confess her feelings since she's too shy to say anything herself. But then he begins wondering if the gift may possibly be for Madoka herself. At the thought, Madoka becomes emotional at the thought of her daughter showing her gratitude for all that her mother has done for her, even collapsing onto the sidewalk as she thinks of Yachi all the way to her wedding day.

That night, Yachi is carefully measuring the ingredients for her Valentine treat. She wonders if she measured too much or too little, but her mother assures her that being a little off won't be troublesome. As Yachi continues to fret over the measurements, Madoka silently vows that she will love and appreciate anything that Yachi will give her.

On Valentine's Day, Madoka and her colleague are hiding in bushes as they watch Yachi present her gift to Kiyoko as a sign of gratitude for all she had done for the younger girl over the past year. Although caught off guard by this, Madoka is still happy that she saw her daughter grow. As the two are leaving the school, Madoka realizes she needs to thank her co-worker for all he had done and gives him the empty cocoa shells.
